"Nonfiction. The champion cyclist reflect on some of his biggest personal and professional triumphs as well as his difficult battle with cancer and personal lows.
Armstring is pretty polished and you won't find a lot of dirt here. The book has a corporate feel. Still, I'm glad I read it."
"Inside the life of Lance Incorporated. I don't fault him for his ambition, drive or setting goals, but this book lacked the intensity of the first. He's pretty candid (dealing with divorce, doping allegations) however there's no conlcusion by the end of the book. You wonder if there's a part 3 coming and it was left open ended on purpose."
"This, as it appears Lance's life continues to be, is a book about what cancer cannot do. In his own words (pg. 133), Lance says regarding his time with people fighting cancer, "In the end, all I could do was try to encourage their attitude and will, try to talk about what cancer couldn't do. I couldn't take away your spirituality, or your intelligence,. It couldn't take away your love."
I am a Lance fan, so I thoroughly enjoyed reading his second book. I love the story of the Alpe d'Huez and of the father who's son describes his dad's work as, "Daddy makes 'em suffer in the mountains" (p. 176). In a vein similar to John D. Rockefeller, Armstrong coaches us that personal comfort is not the end-all. He shows us how to work hard, to overcome, and the power of challenges. Lance says if he had to choose between having cancer and winning the Tour (7 times) he'd choose cancer. This book teaches you something about fighting, and ceasing each moment.
A favorite quote (p. 59):
"A life of unbroken success is not only impossible, it's probably not even that good for you.""
"I am a fan of Lance and was reading this while watching the tour de france this summer. He's pretty amazing. A little crazy, but arn't most athletes are?"
