Description: Very Good. 0393050955 Skinner's box...or Pandora's box? 2006-06-05 00: 00: 00 Focusing on the ten most controversial psychological experiments of the 20th century, Lauren Slater takes us on a thrill ride to litterally the cutting edges of psychological theory. She gives us the experiements themselves, to be sure, but in some cases, so much more too. For example, though the Stanley Milgram experiment (the one where students were instructed to clinically shock actors giving "incorrect" answers ... read more
"I find it hard to believe the author's claim that she has interviewed many professional psychologists who had not heard of any of these experiments. From Skinner's famous rat pellet dispensing box to Harlow's monkey love experiment, this reads like the greatest hits of the 20th century experimental psychology. I knew half of them well, and had a passing familiarity with about 90 percent of them, but found the book still had surprises to offer.
While I loved the subject matter, I did find the author's style a little too flowery for the subject, at times. For example, this passage where she describes Harlow undergoing electroshock treatments for depression:
"His body jerked a hundred times. He woke up with cotton and clouds in his mouth, and no memory, and somewhere his wife walked with his mother in a midwestern town, and winged beasts were in the sky."
For the layperson with interest in the Behavioral Sciences, you ought to know all of them, if you don't already."
"This was a fascinating nonfiction read and very accessible. I highly recommend it. It reminded me somewhat of Mary Roach; science writing that is sharp, funny, and sometimes involves the author in questionable experiments."
"Thought provoking questions about who we are as human beings and why we behave, feel, etc. the way we do. And goes covers a number of the most disturbing and intriguing social psych experiments out there."
"This book could have been a lot better without all the personal interjections and musings. These are truly fascinating, important moments in the field of psychology, and the book should have stuck to the facts without injecting the "personal essay" style of reportage."
