About this title: A comprehensive introduction to the techniques of exploitation and creative problem-solving methods commonly referred to as "hacking." It shows how hackers exploit programs and write exploits, instead of just how to run other people's exploits. This book explains the technical aspects of hacking, including stack based overflows, heap based overflows, string exploits, return-into-libc, shellcode, and cryptographic attacks on 802.11b.

"Great book that gets very in depth on exploiting software. Mainly sticks to buffer overflows but goes into depth with a few other techniques as well."
"There are a lot of books that purport to be about hacking, but many fall short. Some are simply full of inaccuracies, others are so poorly edited that they make you wonder if they've been inexpertly translated out of some other language. Many seem to be more about the author crowing about how skilled they are.
This one is different. As with many of No Starch Press' books, it's very well put together, well organized, well edited, and accurate.
Essentially covering 3 topics, namely, "Programming", "Networking", and "Cryptology", it provides a great deal of coverage into things like shellcode, heap and buffer based overflow, format string vulnerabilities, various sorts of network scans, and information on attacking wireless encryption.
By far, the strongest section is on the basic overflow exploits; the descriptions and examples here are top notch, very easy to follow and duplicate, and well explained. The information on writing polymorphic, ascii-based shell code is clever, and inspiring."
"this is a very good book on the subject of hacking. it covers all of the fundamentals in great detail with plenty of diagrams and code examples that make the text easy to follow. Topics covered include buffer overflows, writing shellcode, and even some wireless hacking."
