She also sees visions of the Virgin Mary in the forest, and before long she has attracted a cult of fanatical followers who want to put up a church in honor of her visions. The trouble is, the local bishop has called her a fake, Ann herself is appalled by ...

"Interesting book, kind of a slow read. The main story has to do with a teenage girl who sees the Virgin Mary and is asked to deliver a message. Is she is really seeing, lying, on drugs, etc. Alot of people believe her and follow her into the woods. The characters are somewhat interesting, but go off into too many tangents. I think the author wanted to show that God uses flawed people to deliver a message. It also shows that people want to believe."
"Good read (listen). I enjoyed listening to this book, but as I got further along I worried how it would end. I didn't expect a happy ending but I so wanted to have a satisfying ending. Obviously the book was fiction but I started considering . . . if it was factual and there was a young woman who had Mother Mary visions and could possibly perform miracles - I was willing to accept the possibility of small miracles but not the healing of the paralyzed young man. What does that say about my beliefs?"
"A peculiar story written in a peculiar way by the author of the wonder Snow Falling on Cedars. In this novel, a young runaway sees & hears the Virgin Mary in the Oregon forests, & soon develops a vast following. Both the characters & the plot developments are at times implausible, but it's always fascinating reading."
As a great fan of Guterson's previous novels, I was eager to read "Our Lady of the Forest." Page by page, the book has elements that please, particularly the descriptive treatment of the forest community and Guterson's literate dialog. But ultimately the book is a boring disappointment.
Ostensibly, the theme is the personal struggle to come to terms with religious experience. But Guterson makes it clear through this book that he has no first-hand religious experience to draw upon: no anguish of soul, no conversion, no sense of devotion, no spiritual witness, and ultimately no faith. We're left with a portrayal of Christianity so lifeless and banal that it might have been pieced together from NPR talk-shows.
Please, Mr. Guterson, inform your next novel from your own experience, and people it with folks that you really know."
