"To be honest, I was really let down. I have read two other books by Paulo and so I guess they really set the bar really high for everything else that I read of his. The book felt rushed and it didn't tug at your soul like "The Alchemist" does. To give credit it was unique how he put his spin on history with Elijah. I do appreciate that part of it. All in all, not a good read. I forced myself to stay excited about the book."
"Having encountered the same problem with the Alchemist, I am not sure if it's Coelho's writing or if it's the translation. There are points in both books where the writing seems shallow, choppy, and extrememly repetitive. It's unclear to me if this is a function of poor editing or poor translation from his native language. Either way, I found it very tiresome because both books seemed to have something very profound to say (though I disagree with some of his underlying dogma - I have a hard time believing God let's people die to prove things to us. The point of other people's lives is not teach us things! Everything isn't about us, for cryin' out loud!). The writing in the Witch of Portabello flowed much better, but it was not as deep a book (though interesting in its own right). This was a decently done fictionalized bible story with some decent spiritual insights."
"This book was interesting to me, I love that it is historical fiction with the religious/spiritual twist. But at the same time, I agree with many of the reviews that the characters seemed somewhat shallow. Although I felt as though I should be heartbroken by the death of the widow, I wasn't. Maybe because she's never named, I'm really not sure. I just didn't feel much of an emotional connection there. But overall, it was another good, easy read which made me reflect on myself, my life and my choices."
"If you are interested in history, spirtuality and a fulfilling message, you can't go wrong with this book. Coelho writes his interpretation of the story of Elijah, the old testament prophet, who underwent trials, tribulations, and suffering all while learning about himself, human love, and his capacity for forgiveness. A moving and relevent book, whether you are interested in spiritual development or if you just want to understand the historical conflict between Israel and Lebanon. A must read."
