About this title: With a thrilling narrative that sheds much light on recent events, this national bestseller brings to life the 1953 CIA coup in Iran that ousted the country's elected prime minister, ushered in a quarter-century of brutal rule under the Shah, and stimulated the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and anti-Americanism in the Middle East. Selected as one of the best books of the year by the "Washington Post" and "The Economist", it now features a new preface by the author on the folly of attacking Iran.

"I found this book a compelling read about the history of the CIA's role in the coup that helped dead-end democracy and progressive politics in Iran. Kinzer's premise is that if it hadn't been for British imperialism and the United States's need to squash any and all governments that hinted at supporting the U.S.S.R. (even in the absence of convincing evidence), Iran would be an extremely different place. Until the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq, a man intent on socializing his country's oil industry, Iranians were extremely fond of the United States."
"I started reading this shortly after the June 2009 elections in Iran. It had been recommended to me several years ago by a friend. Added insight about the 1953 CIA-orchestrated coup that led to the overthrow of democratically elected Mossadegh, the reinstallation of the Shah, and ultimately to the Islamic Revolution. The book reads like a novel.
Some of the claims made by the current government of Iran after the demonstrations following this election were really reminiscent of what Kinzer reported blaming "outside influences" for the demonstrations in 1953."
"This is the first book that I can truly say gave me a foundation for knowing what is going on in the Middle East. Last week I even read an article in the New York Post on Iran, & I knew what it was all talking about! This book makes me mad, sad, hopeful...all at once. Kinzer does a fabulous job of telling the facts while keeping the reader riveted. Even the chapters on history were intriguing. This edition has a new prologue, which I thought was excellent. I am so excited to talk about the book at group this Tuesday, & I hope everyone will read it! It's really one book that is relevant for today."
"And we were once so naive as to believe that America's problems in the Middle East stemmed from our strong support of Israel in the Yom Kippur War of 1973 -- remember that oil embargo that was going to cause us, greedy Americans that we were, to do something about our "dependence on foreign oil"?
Try 1953. A national election in Iran that was actually won fair and square by someone who threatened to upset our playground. Well, he couldn't stay in power, could he? Enter Kermit Roosevelt, grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt, and the CIA. If you ever had any doubts that America could behave as imperialistically as the Europeans, this book will give you the truth. Then it's up to each reader to decide whether or not the American government is "capable" of doing the right thing. Does that mean I condone terrorist acts? Absolutely not!!! But I can still wish that we had done our research -- and that we had not been so terrified of Communism. We should have had more faith in our republic, and we should have sought better means for accomplishing our goals. I teach college history and geography, and I can attest to the fact that my students, at least, haven't a clue about what happened last year. "Forget about 1953. That's ancient history. It has no bearing on 'my' life, so what's the point?" Perhaps the point is that we might spread the blame around a little more evenly. No situation arises in a day, or a year, and often not in a presidential administration. We have to go back to Calvin Coolidge to find a president who had no direct involvement in creating the situation we find ourselves in today!
This book shook me to my core. It demonstrated just how long, and how completely, our government officials have been willing to deceive us "for our own good.""
