"This has been a book of mixed feelings for me. I picked it up in the bookstore lord only knows how many times before I finally downloaded it to listen to at work. The authors name seemed vaguely familiar (I didn't place him in my memory with Maniac McGee until after I finished listening to it) and the plot sounded interesting, but I was afraid that it would seem forced or unrealistic.
To a certain degree my fears were founded. I realized fairly quickly that this was a book that I would need to accept that it was not going to be a realistic story. The setting, the background stories, the general gist of what was going on during WWII is all accurately portrayed, but the actual story of the main character is not one that I could accept as rational. Readers need to approach the story open to looking past this point in order to allow the impact of the more important message to come through. I think this would be an excellent book for young adults to read in ADDITION to other more factual based stories about WWII (such as Anne Frank). What I like about Milkweed that I think is not offered in other stories is the insight into how something like the Nazi's party rise to power could happen. How could a whole nation of people condone the attempt to wipe out entire populations of individuals?
If I were to rate this book simply based on how much it got me thinking and how profound of an insight I felt it offered, I would give it five stars. My issue, however, is the consistency in the writing. I had a really hard time getting into the story initially. The whole scene with the boys hanging out in the horse stall when we are first being introduced to Misha seemed to drag on to me. The story eventually begins to congeal into a much more eloquent writing style, and continues to maintain this level, until the plot suddenly speeds into a crashing finale. I actually had to go back and re-listen to a large section because I thought I had missed something. Nonetheless, I think the content of the story is enough to outweigh the writing issues, and I'll be setting this aside to have my kids read one day."
"I started reading this book on September 10,2009, and i finished it in 3 days. It's amazing! Certainly one of my favorite books. It's so sad to know that the holocaust actually happened. I can't figure out how this kid at a very young age, without knowing anything about the world, survives. He looses everything he has, his family, his friends, his identity. He doesn't know who he is, where he came from, what his family looked like, or how did he get to the place he is right now. He has been called stopthief, stupid, jew, gypsy, one-ear Jack, bue who is he really? Thanks to Uri, one of his new friends, he learns to live in the world of the streets. Through along the story, he gets to meet new people that stay in his heart for ever, like Janina and Uri. Thankfully he survives, stays working as a slave in a farm for about 3 or 4 years. One day he finally runs away. He tries to look for his friends, but he never finds them, and thats when he moves to the United States and start a new life, always remembering the ones he left behind."
"This book is about a strange non average boy who doesnt know his name or anything about his life. Soon in the story this boy is given the name Stoptheif, because he happens to be very poor and cannot afford to take care of himself. This name suit him well because he was so poor he stole from stores. Along the way he meets many new friends that help him and guide him through his troubled times. These friends encourage him and try to make him a better person, by teaching him some good ideas to use around where they live.
I can connect because when new kids come in the school, I always try to welcome them and make them feel like they have someone to talk to in our school so they can feel more comfortable and relaxed. I like to give them advice on what to look out for and which path they should walk in. I like to be a leader to them so they can look up to me like "Stoptheif" and his friend.
I would rate this book a 4 because I like the way they use situation that made you feel like you had a lot and that you should be thankful and help out the people who are less fortunate than you because its everyone is going to have a rough life but you got to get through it some how and move on to better things."
"This book tells the story of a mysterious boy who seemingly doesn't know his name. But then in the beginning of the book he earns one of his odd names Stoptheif, because he was poor as a boy so he had to steal food from local markets. However this book is set in world war 2 from 1939-1945. This boy also meets a man named Uri who soon becomes his protects him and teaches him how to survive n the place they live in.
I can relate this book to many great friendships because in my opinion this book teaches people about what a true friendship is made of. In this book the friendship is between Uri and the boy. Uri never left him when he needed him the most.
I give this book 2 stars because when I first read it had it's good parts. However after a while it didn't really pull me into the story. But I think Jerry Spinelli brought great humor to a serious war story but also gave a real meaning to the characters as well. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good war story or who is into history."
