"This is the story of Jeremy Jacob and his adventures in becoming a pirate. While spending the day at the beach with his family, Jeremy is chosen by a group of pirates to join them on their ship because of his wonderful digging skills. Jeremy immediately decides to become a pirate because of the joys he thinks it will bring him, as long as he gets back for his soccer practice the next day. Jeremy comes to enjoy the customs of being a pirate, especially the lack of table manners and having no bedtime. But as Jeremy is trying to fall asleep and is in need of someone to read him a bedtime story, he realizes that the life of a pirate is not what he originally thought and that he would rather be home with his mom and dad. Jeremy has a great idea to lead the pirates to his own home to safely bury their treasure. After the pirates and Jeremy bury the treasure they bid their farewell and Jeremy has time to make it to soccer practice. This is a great story that allows children to be imaginative and creative. This is a story that would encourage children to be carefree and give them a sense of reassurance that it is ok to believe in pirates or buried treasures. I think this would be a wonderful book to use as a read aloud in the classroom. It could be used to help children make different types of connections as well."
"Read to first graders, in honor of "Talk like a pirate day". David Shannon's illustrations are great (as usual). The story line is nothing special, but the pirate theme drew in some of my "reluctant listeners""
"How I Became a Pirate By Melinda Long Long, M (2003). How I Became a Pirate. San Diego, CA: Harcourt Inc. Illustrated By: David Shannon Summary: this is a fun and colorful story. He does not have to be polite and has no bedtime, every child's dream. But life is not all its cracked up to be on a pirate ship."
