"Per the suggestion of my son's Chief, USN, so I will understand what is going on in the East, I am reading this book. I know it's important to stay informed and understand what my son is doing over there, so I fight past the yawning of this story. I can't believe this is nonfiction and that a part of the world considers us infidels, spooky."
"If you want to understand why America is hated not only by Islamic extremists but by much of the Muslim world, then you'll find clear answers in this book."
"It's disappointing that this is what most people assume to be the truth about Islam and its relationship to fundamentalist terrorism. This book is a lesson in "Orientalism": looking at an eastern culture from the outside in from a western perspective rather than trying to look at it from the other perspective."
"t was a relatively quick read and author has written a plethora of books about Islam. The book does not follow that closely with the title in talking about the crisis.
General Thesis: Islam was brought up different from Christianity and Judaism. Latter two were established under downtrodden situations and seperate from the state or nation. Christianity = Matthew 22:21 - Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things which are God. Islam, under Muhammad, was established concurrently as a religion and a political system. There was no seperation. The crisis to Islam is that the world, for the most part, has rejected such a tight link between religous and secular law, except in Middle East.
Islam expansion has been through jihad - originally thought to have meant holy struggle. Now people use it more as a war cry. It teaches that four types of wars are legitimate - against infidels, apostates, rebels, and bandits. The first two only count as jihad.
Overall - interesting but only stays on the periphery."
