About this title: Hailed as "one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war" by acclaimed author Paul Fussell, With the Old Breed remains the most powerful and moving account of the U.S. Marines in World War II. Now, with his long-awaited sequel, China Marine, E. B. Sledge continues his story where With the Old Breed left off and recounts the compelling conclusion of his Marine career. "Excellent follow up to "With The Old Breed". Mostly covers his 6 months in occupied China in late 1945 to early 1946 and also his return home and coping with his war experience. The subject matter here is comparatively mundane after "With The Old Breed" but still fascinating and written in the same honest, unpretentious style. The chapters at the end after coming home were very moving after following him through both of his books. This book may not mean as much to those who have not read "With The Old Breed" already."
"In the fall of 1945, there existed in China a power vacuum that many opposing factions stood ready to fill. Into this seething cauldron of political and ideological unrest we arrived - the survivors of the battle of Okinawa - more like schoolboys on holiday than mighty conquerors.
This is the follow-up to With the Old Breed. It's good, but not as great as the first book. Eugene is stationed in China where he sees the "last of old China and the rise of the Communist state". Then, he returns home. We read about the difficulty he has adjusting to life back in the States and the slow return to normalcy."
"Mr. Sledge is truly a remarkable human. He has somehow, in this and his prior book, With the Old Breed, conveyed to the reader the horrors of war. What it's like to be in the trenches, the whole experience, it's based on his war diaries. What makes these books required reading is that they are so well written, so personal and through all the tragedy he finds it possible to see beauty as well. Whether it's in his fellow soldiers or the Old City in China. I found myself deeply touched be his two books. As an aside, the last few episodes of Ken Burns' War was based on With the Old Breed complete with interviews of the author who passed away in 2001. It really helped to see and hear the person behind these two books."
"Dr. Sledge's sequel to "With The Old Breed". He tells of his service in China and the friends he made there. A poignant look at a veterans' homecoming. The complains of civilians over trivial things bring home the reality of the brutality of war in the Pacific. A good read for anyone interested in what happened to veterans from WWII when they returned home. The book was published after Dr. E. B. Sledge's death. I recommend it highly."
