About this title: First published in Germany in 1894, after being banned in Russia, "The Kingdom of God Is within You" reveals Tolstoy's world outlook after his conversion to Christianity. He argues that the kingdom of God is within reach of all. The core of the book deals with his non-resistance to evil, a principle Tolstoy passionately advocated. Gandhi was won over by the book. "This is incredible...from the man who inspired ghandi and penned his feelings bout antiestablishment practices and non-violent response. enjoying it immensely, esp. after reading Abbie Hoffman..."
"Some of what Tolstoy argues is legitimate and certainly his descriptions of the church as an institution are valid in many if not most cases. However, I cannot easily swallow a book that kicks out one of the primary tenets of Christianity; the doctrine of grace.
Tolstoy writes about grace "And what is most important of all--the man who believes in salvation through faith in the redemption or the sacraments, cannot devote all his powers to realizing Christ's moral teaching in his life.
The man who has been instructed by the Church in the profane doctrine that a man cannot be saved by his own powers, but that there is another means of salvation, will infallibly rely upon this means and not on his own powers, which, they assure him, it is sinful to trust in.
Grace is the unmerited favor of God. It is God's gracious gift of salvation through Christ's death to those who do not deserve it (all of us). It cannot be earned. To receive it you repent of your sins and accept what He has given to you. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Yes, what Tolstoy writes can be a kick in the butt for those who rest on their laurels or hide behind semantics and false arguments. However, I can't recommend this as a book that edifies. It is worth reading, so that you know what people are talking about but do not expect to find your faith encouraged or strengthened by reading it."
Read the description; I think it's pretty right on.
If you've ever called yourself a Christian, this is a must read. If you think Christians are misguided or even dangerous, you should read this book. If you like certain aspects of Christianity but think that organized religion is a crock, you should read this book. If you think war is a necessary evil, read this book. If you think Gandhi was on to something, you should read this book. If you consider yourself an anarchist, you should read this book. If you think anarchists are ridiculous, you should read this book. If you haven't read this book, you should read this book."
"It was sad to see Tolstoi's predictions about the end of war, punishment of crime, and other brutality. When he wrote this in the late 1800s, he seemed confident that "man" would soon move beyond violence. I am not sure if he would have been shocked if he had lived a 5 more years, but he would have been disappointed.
From a spiritual standpoint, I was conflicted by his interpretation of non-resistance. Although I long ago rejected the idea that the Sermon on the Mount was geared toward another "dispensation," I also reject Tolsoi's assertion that it is the sum total of Christianity. His ideas regarding organized religion as such, especially state-churches, are on point. It reminded me of my own discomfort when I see Christ's teachings linked with economic models, patriotism, politics, and other functions of the state.
As far as Tolstoi's actual writing, he repeats himself a few times throughout the book, and he also at least "begs the question" in one instance, and the book seems to jump around. Had this been written in the beginning of his career, I might understand why. However, this has come after so many of his acclaimed writings.
All and all, I recommend this book (I recommend every book.)"
