"I know that every parent has a style that works best for them and children who each are different, but for me, this book was just right. I read this book after receiving a recommendation from my good friend Jessica. I Loved the helpful tips it gave about helping to calm and soothe newborns. It truly helped me in times when I couldn't find anything else to do to help my son when he was crying during the first few months of his life. It was written by a pediatrician who had years of experience working with newborns and I deeply respected his research and ideas. Everything just made sense and I felt that it was a positive approach to helping calm the crying. Many tips in this book are research based and I loved how natural each of these methods (and the 5 S's) seemed to work for my son. A must read for new moms and dads who want to learn ideas about how to lovingly calm their newborns!"
"I read this book during the last few weeks of my pregnancy and the first few weeks of Adeline's life. I recommend this as a must read to any future parent. I think it was really helpful in knowing how to keep Adeline calm - and might be one reason she was not terribly fussy during her first few months of life.
Dr. Karp takes what he believes are the 'myths' surrounding a colicky baby, explains their origins, and then debunks each myth. I thought it was marvelous. He then explains his basic theory - that each baby has a fourth trimester outside the womb where they are adjusting to this new world and all the changes it brings. He gives parents concrete suggestions for replicating the womb-like environment and therefore reducing the amount of stress (and the connected crying) on your baby. I tried all his suggestions and they worked - the swaddling, sushing, white noise, swaying, etc all contributed to keeping (or getting Adeline back to) calm. I kept this book out on my shelf during Adeline's early months and it will be re-read once another little one is on the way...
Now I am on to his book about toddlers....and so the ride continues."
"This book mostly just focuses on how to soothe an upset baby. I guess I'll know better how effective it is once I meet my baby (although I'm hoping that he won't be so fussy that I'll need to implement this approach).
I must admit that I thought he made a lot of unfounded claims about the evolution of babies, and based a lot of his ideas on either cave men or primitive cultures. I'm not convinced that you really need to recreate the womb for your newborn baby.
Without having any personal experience with actually having a baby, I would say that I preferred the ideas presented in both Babywise or the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Those books seemed to resonate more with what seems to make sense to me."
"This book was okay. I felt that it was someone's popular opinion that wasn't backed up with research and facts. I haven't quite finished it yet (don't know if I will) but I haven't seen one single scientific reference. The author is a pediatrician and only sites his own practice for reference. I agree with 65% of what this book says. Much of it makes sense to me, but again, it's not backed up and there are some logic leaps that I don't buy. Interesting theory though about the fourth trimester. Also, as a mother to a VERY mellow baby, I haven't taken away much helpful knowledge. This book seems to be focused on babies with colic."
