About this title: Chuck Palahniuk moved to Portland, Oregon, right out of high school, and continues to live there, and to enjoy the city's oddities and traditions. Here he takes the reader on a tour that includes a vacuum cleaner museum, the raunchy Dirty Duck Pub, and the world's largest hairball.

"An awesome read, and a quick one at that, so there's no reason not to!
I guess we all know CP for his fiction, but what a great opportunity to hear his writing in his own voice about a subject he's obviously passionate about. I'm going to Portland soon, and rather than read up on the city through stale tour guides and newspaper articles first, I decided to pick this up instead and hear about the city from a quirkier point of view. And what a great one it is! Even if you have no plans to go there or don't care for the city at all, this book is valuable just for the stories alone. Not only does he dig up stuff from memory lane, but he writes in way that really welcomes the reader into the world in which he lived, without judgment.
I can't wait to see the city for myself, and hopefully not too much of his storytelling settings will have disappeared already. Regardless, CP has immortalized a fraction of quirky Portland in this collection, and at least we have that."
"I definitely feel I know Portland better after reading, and Chuck was a fun guide. He hits just enough history and tourist sites to provide an overview for the casual traveler, but the author of Fight Club takes a walk on the dark side. I might not follow his lead should I go there, but he definitely shines a light on places and people that I'd never know otherwise."
"Though, I am sure, many of the places the author describes no longer exist, I enjoyed this read. I loved the "postcards", especially b/c this was my first palahniuk experience. I felt like I had to jump on the wagon, living in portland and all. I like his style .. and do plan on checking out his fiction ... any recommendations? Oh, and I would like to check out some of the spots that actually are still here .. so if anyone wants to check out that self-cleaning house or underground tunnels let me know. Since finishing this book the only places I ventured were elk island (the author believes it to be one of the most beautiful places in portland, and I think that says a lot about him) and the court house ninth floor garden, where I went instead of going to jury duty. :)"
"I enjoyed this book, especially after living in Portland for the past 8 years. Each chapter is preceded by a Postcard from Chuck every couple of years starting in the early 80s and ending in 2002, which gives a little insight into what was going on with his life at the time. Overall I enjoyed the postcards more than the bits about Portland. It was clear that some parts were much more enjoyable for Chuck to write than others- and he was up front about that in a couple of spots.
When we discussed this book we thought about what we'd add if we wrote it today- I think that the consensus was to write about the Bike movement and 'foodies' - the amazing food scene in Portland, especially the Brunches!
The discussion of the book lead us to wonder if we are at the 'peak' of Portland being so awesome, as one does not realize until it passes...
All in all, I enjoyed the book, especially as a resident of this wonderful city. I wonder how people who have never been to Portland feel after reading this book..."
