About this title: In 1896, a Norwegian immigrant named Helga Estby and her teenage daughter, Clara, set out to walk from Spokane to New York in order to win a $10,000 bet, hoping to save her family's home from foreclosure. Armed with pistols, five dollars each, and equal parts determination and desperation, they set out on May 5, and supported their journey with odd jobs and, as they became objects of curiosity, photographs of themselves. They arrived in Manhattan in December, only to find that the contract was not honored. Penniless, they arrived back in Spokane the following summer, and Helga was vilified by ...

"Little detail remains of the story of Helen Estby and her daughter's walk across America in 1896 because all of her writings and letters were destroyed by two of her children following her death. Linda Hunt, however, manages to piece together a fascinating book by taking a few newspaper articles and other scant remaining records of this event and backing it up with great period research to give you a real feel for the attitudes and feelings of the time. This book will make you want to rush out and record the memories of your parents and grandparents and never, ever treat them as cavalierly as the Estby children did."
"My SIL Christine recommended this book and her recommendations are usually really great reads. This book was a great read too. So, why then only 3 stars? Well, it isn't compelling or exciting, infact it is frustraiting. But I loved it anyways! In the 1890s Helga's family was about to lose their home so she took an offer to walk from Spokane Washington to NYC in one summer. She would be paid $10,000 if she completed the walk, all by foot, by the deadline in December.
Her family was ashamed of her for doing this and destroyed all of her memoirs as well as all other record of her accomplishment. Only a few newpaper articles survived the family's thorough scrubbing of her history. This book address the silencing of women's stories. If a man had done this it would have been adventurous and groundbreaking. But because it was a woman, it was shameful and irresponsible.
This book is the story of her adventure told from an academic reseacher's point of view. If you are up for writing a fictional account of this book you could be rich and famous! Unlike poor Helga."
"Reading this book made me want to know so much more about this woman, Helga Estby, and the times she lived in. It made me angry to read about the people who misled her, people can be jerks! I wonder about her husband, what was his story? I am curious about the late 1800's in the Northwest. It's so sad to have lost the original journals she kept. I would like to find some of the research the author found to see if I draw the same conclusions. It was an easy read."
"A fascinating story. You learn a lot about what life was like back then, and can appreciate what kind of spunk and determination it took for Helga and Clara to undertake this challenge. What a tragedy (among the other tragedies in this story) that we do not have Helga's record of the events, as it was burned by bitter family members (why would they be bitter? You'll have to read to find out!). The author had to piece the story together using other records and newspaper accounts along their path."
