"Finally, after 10 books, I have figured one out before I got to the end of the book. I don't know if Evanovich is slacking, I'm just good or I've read so many I'm starting to catch on to her trickery, but I knew the killer before she told me this time. Quite an accomplishment, I know.
That made me feel good about myself, and completely changed my perspective on the book.
I thought the beginning was a little slow. Yes, Stephanie was getting stalked by a killer while she was looking for a missing man. She also got to go on a nice little trip to Vegas. But it wasn't until halfway through the book that you figured out what was happening.
I liked the whole gamer idea that came out of it. I could see it happening in real life. Who doesn't like games? If you like the idea of gaming ... and making it come to real life, you should also check out Julie Kenner's Codebreaking Trilogy. I've only read the 3rd one, The Prada Paradox, but it's along the same theme as To The Nines.
I give To The Nines 3 bookmarks because I figured it out, I would've only given it 2 if not"
"While not a very distinct difference than the other 15 or so Plum novels, I did feel Evanovich put more than the usual effort into this one in drawing the characters out. Same general story line (Stephanie Plum draws a skip, somehow ends up in her own trouble, blows up a car, had family issues, can't decide between Morelli and Ranger...), but just seemed to have more heart than normal. If skipping amongst the books, definitely stop on this one.
What I do find amazing is that every one of her books out here has an average rating over 4...I'm stretching it giving this a 4, and this is I believe the best one of hers. For her to average a 4.1, the vast majority of people are giving all of these Plum novels a 5...something is awfully wrong when Janet Evanovich is getting a bunch of 5's, and some of the great books can't get above a 3 average."
"The heroine of these books is Stephanie Plum, an inept bounty hunter from Jersey employed by her cousin Vinnie. In this book Vinnie branches out to include visa bonds in his bail bonds business. As soon as he issues one, the person in question skips out on the bond, and it's up to Stephanie and Ranger to track him down.
Some of the funniest scenes in the book take place when the search takes Stephanie, Lula, and Connie to Las Vegas. Lula is on a diet in order to become a super model and her scenes made me laugh out loud.
Not much of Stephanie's family in this one and I would have liked more of Grandma Mazur, but there was more of Morelli's family and his Grandma Bella's visions about Stephanie added a lot to the book.
A nice touch in this book is that Stephanie's car makes it through the book unscathed, but the same can't be said of the bodyguards Ranger assigns to her.
The book isn't all fun and games though. What starts off as a simple hunt for a skipped visa bond evolves into a cat and mouse game between Stephanie and an unknown assailant determined to harm her.
If you like mysteries with a lot of action and a lot of laughs, this is the series for you!"
The mystery surrounding the missing person in this book isn't so much who did it - sorry Janet, that was a bit obvious - but how/why. It took 'til at least three quarters of the way through and memories of some wierd film whose name I can't remember to work that one out. The villan is pretty creepy though and the last bit ... urgh! I think that in terms of sense of menace this is only beaten by the first one.
However, we are talking Stephanie Plum and the gang so there is plenty of farce to brighten things up. Lula's reaction when she finds out she's wasted her knickers on a fake Tom Jones, the inability of Stephanie's crackshot bodyguards to deal with the chaos that surrounds her, Connie's (possible) marriage to an Elvis impersonator ...
Anyway, that's my last one for now - at least until I get back onto bookcrossing and start searching out the rest!"
