"Mma Ramotswe is at it again! The No. 1 Ladies Dectective Agency has taken on some new and interesting cases. In this story things are not as clear cut as they seem and Precious Ramotswe ponders the morality of telling the truth, telling lies and in general the imperfection of the human condition. Her insights into the psyche of human nature are all to true. Alexander McCall Smith has again created a wonderful vignette of stories that delight the reader with their simple storyline, yet complex implications into the nature of women, men and children. In this series we get to know several characters more intimately including, Precious Ramotse's fiance Mr. J.L.B. Maketoni. He is a wonderfully rich character that adds much to the story and I am looking forward to reading future installments that include the evolvement of their relationship. I am constantly enthralled by McCall Smith's description of the African continent and it's people and find these descriptions both heart warming and heart breaking. It seems there are many changes ahead for Mma Ramotswe; a new family an assisant dectective and a new husband. I look forward to the continuation of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and the unique insights that Precious Ramotswe has for the readers."
"Another lovely recording by narrator Lisette Lecat, the talented native South African who was apparently specifically selected by author Alexander McCall Smith to narrate all recordings of his No. 1 Ladies Detective series. The only less than perfect part of Ms. Lecat's recording is her inability to capture an American accent (one of the characters in this title is American): She overly emphasizes the "rrrr" in American speech with everything else sounding softly South African / British to this American ear.
As this is the second title in the now 11 book series, "Tears of the Giraffe" spends time further fleshing out the main characters who were introduced in book one, in particular Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, introduces some new ones, and solves a missing person mystery along the way, all in ruminating, gentle fashion. This is a good series for the faint hearted."
"This is the other book in the No. 1 series that I read in London and on a Welsh walkabout, and it was a great great choice. In a weird way, it reminded me a bit of Trollope, but I want to explain that before I give the wrong impression to anyone who doesn't love Trollope as much as I do.
There's a certain kind of stylist (and Trollope was a master) who takes you to psychological truth and real insight into human character and a specific world, which doesn't find expression in a "noticeable" writing style. I don't mean that the writing style is anonymous in any way, but more that it doesn't call attention to itself the way some other styles do, and that's why it's so masterly and deceptively simple. I guess it's like wandering in parts of Italy where you're just going down some street and every time you turn the corner on what seems like a routine journey, you find yourself at a wonderful plaza or fountain or view. That's why I will probably read everything in this series."
