"When it was revealed to the audience that the object of the main character's affections and cause of his marital infidelity is ...a goat, there were gales of laughter. Later I wondered how the actor felt for his character when this brutal, smug but readily understandable response was nightly unleashed. I'm sure our wonderful actor William Zappa, saw it as a challenge to have us all weeping by the finale.
This is a brilliant work of art in the form of a play. To try to teach an audience through a work of art that often we will be unable, completely unable to put ourselves in another's shoes, to be totally unable to comprehend their deepest soul, yet have to go that one almost impossible step further of absolute blind faith (which religion kids itself that it demands) by trusting that their experience is fully legitimate despite our utter blindness...THAT is true acceptance.Or faith. Or whatever you want to call it.
The ending of the play is devastating but logical: What we fail to understand we feel compelled by fear to destroy. Hence gay murders exonerated by the law as "understandable". No faith or acceptance there. Or in the Holocaust. Or in....loving a goat?"
"I don't exactly know how to feel about this play. In my view, this play is about Midwestern anxiety about San Francisco values. (A San Francisco architect who has been chosen to design a city in the Midwest that is supposed to stand as an example of the American city of the future.) It's funny at times, absurd even, and on the other hand its also... well, gross. You can't really get into the issue of bestiality without feeling revulsion, can you?"
