"Another holiday and another Reacher. But hold on a minute, something is very different here. This is written in 1st person. You know something has changed but it takes a while to pick it out.
Usual format although this one has a nice line when the trick played at the beginning is summed up by reacher himself as "having more holes than swiss cheese". This is a nice line and allows you to forgive the author anything else that transpires. I think Child just plays with the form. His books are all identical and loved by the readers (see all the amazon 5 star reviews) so why not just stick to the formula.
This time reacher sees a former collegue that he knew 10 years ago and thought was dead. There is a bit of a trick when you think that Reacher has foiled an kidnapping attempt and accidently shoots a cop - this is played for all its worth and the new first person perspective plays into this beautifully - you are not sure what is going on.
It turns out that in investigating the former colleague through connections he is contatced by the DEA who have been staking out the man.
Cue a split time frame book where we understand who the man is and why reacher hates him (selling secrets in the iraqi war and killed one of his many strong female leads) and the current where we have a family of gun runners under siege by an even more sinister organisation and the usual / same story of reacher kicking butt.
Works a lot better than the last novel in the series. Enjoyable and will continue."
"With Jack Reacher novels, you know what you're going to get: brutal, sometimes nonsensical violence and terrifically awful sex scenes. This installment, though, may feature the worst sex writing yet. Example:
She was strong, too. I must have outweighed her by a hundred and thirty pounds, but had worn me out. She was young, I guess. She had maybe ten years on me. She had left me exhausted, which made her smile. She had a great smile. "Remember my hotel room in Boston?" I said. "The way you sat on the chair? I wanted you right then." "I was just sitting on a chair. There wasn't a way to it." "Don't kid yourself." "Remember the Freedom Trail?" she said. "You told me about the long-rod penetrator? I wanted you right then." I smiled."
"I think I've read a Jack Reacher novel before, but I can't remember which one. He is a man's man, I think. Personally, I'm not that into lengthy discussions of guns and other weapons, or what one must do to make them air correctly. Reacher is an ex-military cop who know seems to be a wandering mercenary who just falls into the situations that need his help. Some of his exploits were interesting, but it was all a bit OTT for me. If you LIKE real gung-ho man's man, derring-do against impossible odds kind of stuff from a really not all that sympathetic of a character, then you will probably like this book."
"Really enjoyed this book. Nothing deep here--a standard pulp thriller that doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Good storytelling paired with good writing almost always produces good results. My first Reacher book, and I'm looking forward to trying out the others (Kindle free book strategy paying off). Reacher is an engaging anti-hero, well-drawn and believable--as are the rest of the cast. The exception is Quinn, who's offstage penchant for mutilation and evisceration seem totally out of character with the man who appears on stage (the gore made it seem as if the author felt he needed something over the top, a villain's signature of sorts, to make the man evil and bloodthirsty). The ending was a bit off, too, with the normally cold, decisive, and relentlessly driven by revenge Reacher becoming indecisive and almost forgiving. A good editor and another few months of polishing would have made this a much better book."
