About this title: Retiring at the end of CITY OF BONES, Detective Harry Bosch was looking for a rest. But some months later, Harry needs something to occupy his time, and another retired detective has just the thing--an unsolved case that touched both their lives. Haunted by the memory, Harry decides to take up the investigation. As he follows cold leads and blind alleys, the case begins to open up, and it starts to look as though Angella Benton's death may have been related to a massive robbery. "With Harry outside of the LAPD, he is more reflective and this book lends more insight into his motivations and character. While another good book, the way everything was connected seemed a little bit hard to believe. 5 initial deaths, all motivated out of a single crime."
"I found this book had too much "tell" and not enough "show". At times I felt like I was reading a police file with every little detail set out for me. There were even several full length, 2 to 3 page, "newspaper articles" included. For me, it was a lot of unnecessary detail that could have been summed up in a paragraph.
The plot was excellent and kept me guessing. The main character, Harry Bosch, is great. But I couldn't get lost in the story. I got bored and often found myself skimming the unnecessary descriptive pages."
"Harry Bosch book that takes place right after he has retired. I am listening to the audio version and once again I really like the character especialy because of the voice of Len Cariou. Harry is trying to solve a murder from 4 years ago that he briefly handled. He tangles with some of his friends from the past. One really sad and depressing character is Law who was rendered a quadriplegic after a robbery around the same time. Very enjoyable."
I 'inherited' this book and decided to read it before giving it away. I thought the book got off to a slow start and it took me awhile to get interested. (I have never read a 'Harry Bosch' book, so maybe if I had, I would have gotten into the plot a bit sooner. I'm not normally a reader of this genre, but I have to say, once I got past the slow start, they book held my interest. A lot of suspense, a lot of mystery and a bit of 'revenge'. The solving surprised me a little, but it was a nice change from what I've been reading lately, where everything is predictable. If you are a fan of crime solver mysteries, you will enjoy this book."
