"Reading for a college history class and I have to say that this book has a LOT of holes! When you have to google islamic terms because the book doesn't tell you what they are, come on guy. Americans are typically stick to what they know, and I was raised christian, how would I know what a caliph is? Kishlansky has a tendency to jump from one subject to next without warning, thought they are connected, he gives no reason for the initial jump. It can be very confusing. His writing is very dry and boring. I have more fun reading russian novels than this...."
"I refer to this when I want to see the historical context for contemporary societal patterns, or when I want to understand that what we see today has been done before. Or I read it just to know more about history. So I'm reading it on an ongoing basis."
