Description: New. Perfect book without a remainder mark! From Scientific American: There cannot be many people who have gone into a beavers' lodge. Heinrich, professor of biology at the University of Vermont, did that in his quest to see how animals survive winter. It was a summer when the pond had dried up and the beavers were not in residence, but with a flashlight and room enough to turn around, Heinrich was able to conclude that the accommodation would be quite cozy for a beaver family in winter. ... read more

"Thank you, Professor Heinrich, for being willing and able to do painstaking work persistently and accurately under adverse conditions. Thank you for sharing the fruits of that labor in this layperson friendly text. I found many fascinating details to share with friends and feel pretty well informed about the coping mechanisms that many species use to survive the bitterly cold winter. I enjoyed most of the sections and was consistently impressed by your dedication. From slumbering bears to slumbering bees, you risked your own hide to take measurements and record behaviors that most of us are happy to read about while curled comfortably on our couches. Your fascination and joy are infectious, but I will stay on my couch. Thanks for giving me a peek into the lives of creatures who have no couch to curl up on."
"I really enjoyed this book even though I thought it was a bit too technical for me. However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in animal science or just interested in how animals are able to survive a Maine winter. This book will teach you a lot. For instance, snapping turtles (which need to breathe air) spends months buried in the mud under the frozen water without taking a breath. This book will make you realize just how amazing and complex nature is."
