"Pure escapist bosh and adolescent wish-fulfillment -- and, in a word, I loved it. So perhaps I'm too old for short pants, but there still beats inside of me a heart that responds to the call of adventure. In this, the first book I have read by Rafael Sabatini, I find a worthy predecessor to Bernard Cornwell, Cecelia Holland, and the other writers of historical fiction today.
This book is perhaps the definitive novel about piracy. Captain Peter Blood is more than a match for Jack Sparrow and his ilk. (Though Errol Flynn as Blood in the Warner Brothers film was inspired casting.)"
"It took a while to get used to the author's narrative style, but the story was amazing. The author, while trying to capture the style and tone of the time the story is set, stayed true to the axiom "when in doubt, make it harder on your characters". Every time I picked the book up to read, I was catapulted to John Blood's world. Highly recommended, yet keep a dictionary at hand to look up some of the stranger words that come along."
"Picked it up on a whim. I knew the character's name, but did not know the story. This is the very definition of a page-turner. Not mere pulp pirate fiction, you will find herein forays into morality, justice, redemption, and more, all while delivering all the excitement and action of Pirates of the Caribbean. If you don't know this one, you should."
"Damn! I love this book. I own a 1922 edition. I read it every seven or eight years. Wonderful swashbuckling story of Peter Blood, trained as a physician, he served as a sailor/soldier for nearly ten years before taking up the practice of medicine. Wrongly accused of being one of the Monmouth rebels in 1688, he's tried and sold into slavery, sent to the Jamaicas. Once there the Irishman and his mates escape the brutal, inhuman plantation owner, steal a Spanish pirate ship and sail the carribean under the black flag. Captain Blood becomes a gentleman pirate, a man without a country, longing for the respect of Arabella Bishop, the near angelic niece of his one-time "owner." Peter Blood is cunning, and bold, with a wonderful way of turning people's words against them.
The 1935 Errol Flynn movie was great. The book is even better. Sabatani is an exceptionally droll writer."
