"my first exposure to Rick Bass, and instant admiration and awe from the first story. just spent the weekend with him at a writing retreat in the North Cascades and i have both a deepened appreciation and understanding of his fiction: what he is trying to do with his stories, his techniques and almost-mystical approach to writing, his philosophy of what he wants his stories to do. I'm excited to dive in deeper and have obtained several other collections of his shorts at a used bookstore.
Bass is miscatagorized as a "nature writer" -- that is way too reductive, way too easy. Just because he is passionate about wilderness, respects nature and includes it in a very prominent way in his stories does not mean that is the heart of his work."
"This collection is ok. As someone not in a struggling marriage, the constant return to that issue bored me a bit. That said, I think "The Fireman" and "The Distance" are the two best stories here. This is definitely a book that can be checked out of a library instead of bought and perused through quickly. Reading The Book of Yaak before this collection affected my reading of the stories; reading them the other way around would have been better."
"Most of the stories are beautiful, but _The Cave_ reads like a bad taste of dime store romance. Rick Bass seems to have problems with sexuality, as most of his characters have broken relationships and the act of sex is given short, pathetic, shrift. The most interesting thing about Bass to me is that he tries to reduce the supernatural to the natural -- the physical world becomes a place of wonder and mystery unequaled in its ontological possibility. What creates magic and wonder is the relationship between the individual and the world, not any transcendental reality. It is the relationship between subject and world itself that becomes transcendental in Bass's fiction, which is to say, for Bass, the transcendental is immanent."
