About this title: In this appreciation, Christopher Hitchens identifies George Orwell's three major contributions to the world of ideas: his negative takes on imperialism, fascism, and communism--written at a time when such attitudes were by no means universal. He also takes issue with previous Orwell critics and their misreading of his work.

"an excellent defense of Orwell's politics. The only downside is that Hitchens presumes an enormous familiarity with the English authors that Orwell interacted with, so I had to do a lot of Googling."
"He was anti-colonialist and such an original, iconoclastic thinker that the left and the right both claimed him and rejected him. But he seemed to not like women and was known to make off color remarks about gays."
"I confess that I skipped around a bit when reading this book, and will probably come back and read it through eventually. I think I already know why Orwell matters to me at least- 1984 and Animal Farm were two of the first books to really stick out in my mind and when I read them I am still blown away by the way he whittles down the dark places in human nature so easily- but Chris Hitchen's main point is that the guy never took sides and was objective in his writing.
This book (essay?) mostly made me want to go read more of Orwell's essays. The endless name-dropping was tiresome but I suppose I am not a literary heavyweight."
