"The Thief Lord Cornelia Funke Chicken House Publishing, 2001 349 pages $19.99 ISBN: 0-439-40437-1 11 years and up Rating: 7 ½ / 10
The Thief Lord is just one of many excellent books written by Cornelia Funke, a famous German writer and the author of other bestseller books such as Inkheart (2003) and Dragon Rider (1996). The beautifully crafted plot has earned it much- deserved awards such as the Batchelder Award, the Roswitha Prize, and the Zurich children's book award. The Thief Lord and its engaging plot is loved by children all over the world, and has been published in five languages.
It all starts when two boys named Bo and Prosper run away from their Aunt Esther, who is planning to adopt Bo and put Prosper in an orphanage. They take refuge in Venice with a gang of street kids, under the care of the mysterious Thief Lord, who supplies their every need. However, they are not as safe as they think, for Aunt Esther has tracked them to Venice and hired detective Victor Getz to find them. Prosper struggles alongside Hornet, Riccio, Mosca, and Scipio, the Thief Lord, to save Bo from the awful future that awaits him should he fall into Aunt Esther's cold hands. With Victor on their heels, it gets harder and harder to stay hidden in the dilapidated cinema that serves as their home. Join the wonderfully interesting characters as the story winds its way through the dark underworld of Venice, and discover twisted secrets about the Thief Lord and an ancient roundabout that can alter time itself.
While you don't have to be a specific age or like certain elements in a story to enjoy the captivating mystery surrounding the Thief lord, I would recommend this book to people who especially love mystery, action, suspense and adventure. It is generally for younger readers, although there may be several Italian phrases that may be hard to understand, but that are revealed through context clues. However, this should not detract from the reading, but add to the magic of The Thief Lord."
"This novel, translated from the original German, was disappointing. The story is engaging: orphaned brothers escape from nasty aunt/guardian to Venice, a city their mother told them about. They are taken in by a band of homeless children living in an abandoned movie theater. The leader is the elusive "thief lord," a young thief who keeps the band in food and clothing by stealing, then having the band sell, trinkets and other items from tourists and rich mansions. Complications come with the detective hired by the aunt/guardian to find the orphaned boys and with a commission to steal a mysterious wooden wing from a rich lady. The story is told engagingly. The disappointment comes in the last quarter of the book where the supernatural is inserted in with a fabled carousel that will turn people young or old, depending on where they sit or which direction the carousel goes (unclear), and the too pat, contrived ending where everyone gets what they want, though a few ends and hints are never satisfied/tied in. It's all right as a book, but just doesn't live up to the promise of the early chapters. I have been told by younger readers that this novel is their favorite book. It may be best for younger readers."
"I like to pick up YA novels for light reading, so at my last trip to the library, I grabbed this one. I had seen it at the book store several times, but the synopsis never really grabbed me. Honestly, I think the reason I picked it up finally was becasue of the cover art. A very small silhouette of the title character on a cool blue back drop of Venice finally caused my curiosity to get the best of me. Prosper and his young brother, Bo, escape their grandfather's house to prevent Aunt Esther, a rich snobbish woman, from gaining custody of Bo and seperating the brothers. They end up in Venice, a city their late mother had told them was full of magic. While there, they end up with some nice but down-on-their-luck kids who are being taken care of by the titular character, nee Scipio. Scipio brings treasures he claims are stolen from the houses of the wealthy. The others take his plunder to a shady antiques dealer. But Scipio harbors a secret that would devastate their "operation". To top it all off, Aunt Esther has hired Victor, a Private Eye, to find the boys. It was a fun story to read with interesting characters. I would say that it wasn't as magical as I thought it would be. It struck me more as a light mystery more than anything."
"Cornelia Funke does a wonderful job of telling the amazing story of Proper and Bo, orphans who have escaped to Venice, Italy based on their late mother's fantastical descriptions of the city. Luckily, before Bo and Prosper freeze or starve to death, an already formed band of street children take them in and allow them to live with them in an abandoned movie theatre. Prosper and Bo soon learn that these children are cared for by a child close to their own age who calls himself "The Thief Lord." Between the forgotten items of tourists and the Thief Lord's grand theft adventures, the children believe they are quite well off, that is until they discover the Thief Lord has been keeping a very interesting secret from all of them.
Between dodging a detective their cold-hearted aunt has sent looking for them, trying to survive in the city while staying out of trouble, and discovering the Thief Lord's secret, Propser and Bo embark on an amazing adventure that changes the course of their future.
Cornelia Funke does an amazing job describing Venice in such extravagent detail that readers feel like they're there! The imagery provided brings the story to life, capturing readers of all ages. The characters are lovable and believable making readers want to invite them all into their homes by the end of the novel."
