"I have read several books on the Tudor dynasty & the periods before and after, so I love the subject matter, but I do not care for the author's preening and his assertions that he had "definitively proven" so many things that cannot really be proved. Even worse, he enjoys taking potshots at Alison Weir--one of my favorite historic scholars--and Antonia Fraser. I expect books about history to be about facts, not the author's opinions and biases.
I only got through this book because it was an audio book and I was on a long drive with nothing else available."
"I shouldn't have read the Introduction to this book, because it made me too aware of the author. I mean, it's all well and good that he gave his reasons for the times he diverted from tradition (things like: Catherine was not raven-haired and dark-complected, but fair of skin and hair) but he came off a little too self-important.
But, the introduction aside, I really enjoyed this non-fiction. It was nice to take the focus off of Henry and put it onto the women (and not just Anne Boleyn, for once).
Much as they've been written about, I even learned some new things (or new ways of looking at things?) regarding the whole Catherine/Henry/Anne saga. And that's all I ask from a non-fiction, if it's a topic I've read to death.
As always, I was disappointed when the mention of Richard III made him into a murdering ogre. (Damn you, Shakespeare)"
"Could not put it down. It has really changed my childhood opions of what the wives were like. As a youngster I always thought that Anne Boleyn was the romantic character, but now I admire Katherine of Aragon for her courage and convinction."
"This discusses each of Henry VIII's wives, covering in most detail his first two, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. (It might surprise people to know that Henry and Catherine were actually married for quite some time before he threw her over for the younger, more vibrant Anne.) All the intrigue of the court is here in great detail, though Starkey does seem to favor Anne Boleyn and has a tendency to disparage all Henry VIII chroniclers who came before him. Still, it is an interesting read, especially if also reading other wives of Henry VIII biographies around the same time for comparison."
