About this title: A riveting book for all readers who know and love a place where the sea meets the land. In 1937, Adam Nicolson's father answered a newspaper ad -- "Uninhabited islands for sale. Outer Hebrides, 600 acres . . . Puffins and seals. Apply . . ." -- and found the Shiants (the name means holy or enchanted islands). Adam inherited this almost indescribably beautiful property when he was twenty-one: Sea Room describes, and relives, his love affair with the three tiny islands, composed as he prepares to give them to his oldest son. The Shiants lie east of the Isle of Lewis in a treacherous sea ...

"I loved this book, though I admit my tastes might sometimes be a bit...um, sui generis? "Sea Room" draws the most complete, devoted, intimate, and intricate portrait of a place I've ever read-especially given that the place is a trio of tiny uninhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Actually, millions of birds, sheep, and rats inhabit the Shiant Isles most of the time, and one man, the author, lives on them when he can-weeks or perhaps months out of the year. Nicolson inherited the islands from his father, who bought them as a young man; the chain of ownership, theft, and conquest makes for a colorful tale in itself, as Nicolson tries to learn whether the Shiants were ever "free" to anybody who wished to live on them. One has to go back at least to the early Middle Ages for support of that argument. I think he makes a good case in defense of his (benign) ownership and against his detractors' anti-lairdism, cultural nationalism, pseudo-marxism, and misguided environmental conservationism-which would bring eco-tourists to islands presently unmolested by people.
As he tells us in the first chapter, this book is an "attempt to tell the whole story, as I now understand it, of a tiny place in as many dimensions as possible: geologically, spiritually, botanically, historically, culturally, aesthetically, ornithologically, etymologically, emotionally, politically, socially, archeologically and personally." The resulting book seems sometimes a detective story, sometimes investigative journalism, sometimes a love poem, sometimes a series of meditations about the past, change, solitude and society, our place in nature, and so on. Interestingly, I didn't realize until I was more than halfway through "Sea Room" that I had read a book just last year by this same author and was very ambivalent about it: "Seamanship," a later book about sailing in the western isles, is a much slimmer effort with a good premise but little commitment to it that left me feeling a bit betrayed and not at all fond of the author's character. In fact, he came across as a poncey git. Not so in this book: Nicolson's reverence for the islands, his respect for the shepherds and fishermen who work on or visit them, his patience with the adversity of weather and primitive living conditions, and his obsessive attention to all the details of his isolated property make him quite likeable--enviable even."
