About this title: This biography of William Kidd reveals that he was actually a sea captain hired as a pirate hunter. Zacks evokes the seafaring world of the 18th century, and recounts the rivalry between Captain Kidd and his arch-nemesis, the all-but-forgotten pirate named Robert Culliford.

"This is a bio of William Kidd, in particular his activities as a privateer/pirate in the Indian Ocean and subsequent arrest and trial. The beginning is interesting, especially his exploits before being commissioned as a privateer by the queen. But the book is really just a "this happened, then this happened, then the other happened" account, and begins to drag after awhile. The author is sympathetic to Kidd and makes the case that he was treated unjustly at the time. To what extent that is true I am not sure, but my main takeaway was that Kidd seemed inept at his commission and didn't make a very good privateer or pirate. He was likely a good sailor and tactician though, based on the stories related in this book."
"A book to dispel myths and rumours about one of the most famous of all pirates, Zacks has done extensive research into the events and deals leading up to the labelling of Captain William Kidd as a pirate. From the investment by wealthy merchants, to the building of the Adventure Galley, and the eventual mutiny by Kidd's crew, 'ThePirate hunter' chronicles in fine detail the events that lead to the trialand hanging of Kidd, including the demand by the East India Company and their demand for somebody's head."
"I actually read this about the time the Pirates of the Caribbean came out. I loved learning the history of Captain Kidd and pirates and privateers in general. Richard Zacks does an excellent job researching the true story of Captain Kidd and contemporary pirates and the politics that led to Captain Kidd being accused of piracy. A must read for anyone interested in history and pirates. The details of the real things pirates actually did, really opens your eyes from the movie depiction of the glorious swashbuckler lifestyle."
