About this title: An acclaimed British novelist turns to real life in the Renaissance in this account of Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In realistic detail, King explains how Michelangelo executed his monumental work, exploring not only the difficult process itself but also the cast of characters surrounding the feat, from the pope who commissioned it to the humble workmen on whom the painter relied. In this history of the artist's most famous commission, King debunks the myth of the frescoes' creation, offering a new version of what Michelangelo experienced, as well as an ...

"This books dispels some of the myths surrounding the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The book is created from Michaelangelo's family letters and supporting history. It creates the story of the events surrounding the painting of the fresco, including the physical toll that it took on Michaelangelo. It also touches upon the rivalries and competition between some of the greatest of the Renaissance painters, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, as well as their wealthy and powerful patrons.
On the art side of the story, the author touches upon the fresco techniques used. He also reveals the medical research that Michaelangelo did in order to understand body and muscle structure in order to paint and sculpt. In the book it indicates that Michaelangelo painted humans as nudes first and then clothed them so that the body structure would be perfect.
I think this gives a good interpretation of the internal issues that Michelangelo was dealing as he painted one of the most important treasures in the art world. I think that the author also further explains the political upheaval that was taking place across Europe at a pivotal time in history and religion.
The book is well written and made me look at the fresco in an entirely different way.
-- make the most of my few short weeks remaining in Paris to see as many works by Italian Renaissance artists as I can find
-- write a screenplay based on this book, starring Johnny Depp as Raphael, Gary Oldman as Michelangelo, Sean Connery as Leonardo, and maybe Anthony Hopkins as Julius. then again, Depp may be too old already to play Raphael (thanks to my brother for helping to cast the characters)."
"This is a biography of Michelangelo centering around his frescoing of the Sistine Chapel ceiling at the Vatican in Rome. It is a completely fascinating and well written description of the politics, artistic processes and interpersonal drama that went into the famous fresco. This book is full of art and Roman history, providing a very interesting context to Michelangelo's life and work. I was astonished by the corruption and narcissism of Pope Julius II, who commissioned the ceiling fresco and amazed by the incredible talent of Michelangelo despite some very obvious mental health and personality defects."
"I want to soar to the ceiling in flights of inspiration and majesty. I want to marvel at the shear audacity of creation and imagination. I want the swirling images to be like the music of Mozart. I want to know how so few humans attain the divine. I want to taste the paint in the air as angels guide his hands. I want the world to bow in homage of magnificence. I want to stand silently and weep from beauty. I want to know God smiled.
