"I love this book! I teach staff that work in hospitals and nursing homes about person-centered care and have utilized excerts from this book as examples in my classes. The book contains poetry, short stories and essays written by physicians, nurses and psychiatrists. They speak from the heart of caring about what they do and how they do it. Mind provoking and very worthy of reading. I have recommended this book to many and they have thanked me many times over. I especially love, "The Body Flute" by Courtney Davis. This poem about attening to the dying especially strikes a cord in my students. And my particular favorite is by Rachel Naomi Remen, "From The Heart." It tells the story of a second year medical students emotional battle with trying to find that balance between keeping that distance from her patients or responding from the heart. The story teaches us that although medical professionals are taught in school to keep their emotional distance all all times to protect ourselves, we are human beings. And as human beings at what cost do we keep this distance without losing our humanity? I love this book because it makes us think and explore and provides an almost endless source for discussion."
