About this title: First, there were the dead in the graveyard, two-hundred years dead. I'd been hired to raise them to settle a dispute over who owned the land they were buried in. Then there were the three dead teenagers in the woods, slaughtered in a way I'd never seen before. And then they found the dead girl, drained of blood and left in her bed. I knew what that meant of course. It didn't take a degree in preternatural studies to figure out that something was wrong in and around Branson, Missouri. And I was right in the middle of it. My name is Anita Blake. Welcome to my life ...Look out for information ...

"I love how the experiences in your life change who you are. Anita tries so hard to be morally righteous, but since the Voodoo priestess she has made a few exceptions. What do you do when someone is threatening someones life? Stand there, watching to save your own. Or risk your own life in what seems to be a no win situation. Is it stupid to save yourself? Or, to idly standby when someone's in need? Jewish law says to save others unless your own life will be forfeited. All life is precious, but yours is the most precious. I've never heard of a specific law in any other religion, but maybe they exist. I use this debate when discussing the Holocaust, Russian pogroms, Rwanda, etc. It was interesting to see someone battle with the idea in a supernatural situation. I'd much prefer to study it in fiction than to have someone experience it first hand."
"While not perfect, I think this has been the best of the series so far. I've always loved the plot action in these books but found the over-the-top caricaturization of the main character incredibly annoying. In this installment Anita actually makes mistakes, she experiences doubts, desire, and even some defeat which goes a long way towards making her a character rather than just a caricature. Giving her a side-kick, and thereby a mirror in which to see herself differently, really helped add dimensions to her. Yes we still have to hear about her black Nike's and her inner-pants holster (time after time), but she comes across as much more natural in this book. That, along with a wide and varied host of new monsters, made for an excellent read."
"Definitely one of my favorites. Dark and sensual, Anita Blake is still a badass. I'm becoming somewhat...annoyed with the Richard/Jean-Claude thing. Hopefully it gets resolved quickly. These books are little more...bodice-ripper than I'd really prefer, I wish there was a bit more mystery-solving, planning-ahead/anticipation instead of Anita sort of careening from one life-threatening situation to another, but it does make for a fun, hard-to-put-down read."
"Excellent book! In this one, we get to know Larry and Jason a little better. In my opinion both are well worth getting to know. Through Larry's eyes, Anita can see how jaded and hard she has become. She fears not only for his safety, but for his innocence. She knows that if he is going to survive, he will ultimately have to let go of his lofty ideals of good and evil. He still sees their world as black and white, and Anita knows it is only a matter of time before he realizes how much gray is actually out there. Also, Jean-Claude tells Anita who he was before becoming a vampire, and how and why he was turned. I think this helps her see him as more...well I won't say "human", but maybe she sees him as less inhuman. Because of some evil doings by a vampire named Serephina, Anita is forced to think about her mother's death, and we get a glimpse of what makes her tick in the process. All in all, this book seems to explore the inner workings of the main characters. I think Anita starts to realize that there is not much seperating her from the monsters that she hunts."
