"This is the story of Matt, a young boy who is lives a secluded life in the middle of a poppy field with a woman who is not his mother. When Matt sees other children and wants to play, he sets off a chain of events, beginning with finding out what he is: a clone of a powerful (and very old) drug lord. However, clones are not viewed as people, they are no better than livestock, so Matt grows up as a second class citizen in the lap of luxury. He is educated, he learns music, but Matt is not prepared for when he learns what his true purpose is.
I really liked this book! It had my attention all through, and although I was kinda cranky about the abruptness of the ending, I'm still a satisfied reader! I loved the richness of culture portrayed in the story, from the fantastic Mexican landscape to the intricate Alacran household. I also loved the characters: the loyal immaturity of Fidelito, strong Celia, fatherly Tam Lin, and I even loved the evil soap opera-ness of Tom! Apparently there's a sequel in the works; sign me up!"
"This book is about the life of a boy named Matteo. He has no family and lives alone with his caregiver. When she goes to work, he is left by himself and told not to look out the windows and stay out of sight. Matteo, being a typical curious child, decides to look out the window. As an end result, he is found by some other children and Matteo tries to communicate with them. Matteo jumps out of the window and is taken to a mansion across a field. This story takes place on a plantation that lies between the United States and what used to be called Mexico. As time goes by, Matteo finds out that he was not born, but harvested. His cells where placed in a cow and that is where he grew and developed. Matteo finds more out about himself and he realizes he is only there for his DNA and that they are going to put him down. The only way for him to survive is to escape. As I read this book, I found it difficult to read at first. I am not much of a si-fi reader but it didn't take me long to become interested in it. I think this would be a good book for middle schoolers-high school. This book touches on some large topics here, cloning, DNA, trust, friendship and survival. If this was read in the classroom, it could possibly bring out many current concerns about scientific research, stem cell research and cloning. It is a very engaging book for older students."
"Matt Alacrán has spent his youth secretly secluded away in a hut. His only knowledge of the world is provided by his caregiver, Celia, and his view out the window of the white ocean of poppies growing all around. Matt is a clone, an outcast hated and feared as a beast by human society. When he uses an iron cooking pot to smash his window and goes out into the world, Matt sets into motion a fantastic adventure in a land called Opium, a strip of land between the US and a place once called Mexico. Opium is ruled by El Patron, a 142-year-old drug lord, inhabited by "eejits"-docile farm workers controlled by brain implants-and overseen by an army of bodyguards. Guided by a few friends who love and watch over him, Matt must summon the courage to flee to safety after El Patròn's death, and the compassion to return and attempt to change the drug kingdom forever. He learns to value himself, ignoring the opinion of others, and comes to understand that he has the power to make change for good. This mind expanding fiction will appeal to adventure story lovers as well as the Science-fiction fan.
Recommended reading for junior high and senior high school students."
"I loved The House of the Scorpion. It is science fiction that reads like an adventure story, with edge-of-your-seat plot twists and captivating suspense. Farmer does an excellent job of creating vibrant, believable characters and showing both the good and bad traits of each one. I devoured every chapter, and I loved the twist at the end."
