"I liked the book...the killer is not who you think it is, but someone you don't hear alot about...thought that was odd...the movie is most certainly better!!!"
"I was relieved that Harry Bosch was not the protagonist -- I just can't seem him picking up roots to move to Florida, and immediately getting involved in mysteries when he doesn't have Fla. credentials or knowledge of the social/criminal/law-enforcement scene. Excellent title, that works on several levels. The hero Terrell McCaleb is another "cop with a hitch." The hitch this time is not cynicism born of a long law-enforcement career, or being on the outs with his bosses -- instead, it's forced retirement due to a serious health condition that ended in a heart transplant for him. Nonetheless, the hitch does make him an outsider to conventional officers of the law, which creates the need for him to obtain info without a badge. I liked the way the present mystery (a string of several seemingoly unconnected murders) loops back into a big unsolved mystery fr. McCaleb's earlier career: the identity of the Code Killer, aka James Noone, aka "No One." Pacing of events does get to a fever pitch. Somehow, for me, though, the pacing slows again once McCaleb gets to Mexico and actually finishes off the Code Killer. McCaleb's doing so and not getting caught (although the lady cop does seem onto the deed) strikes me as a big b deus ex machina "cop out.""
"This is the first book I've read by Michael Connelly. I really liked it and plan to read more of his work. I have the first Harry Bosch book - The Black Echo - sitting on my to- read shelf, but there are some other things I'm going to get to first.
I got to hear Michael Connelly speak at ALA in Chicago this year - I went to as many author related events that I could. I hadn't even heard of him prior to this, but I was really impressed with what he had to say about libraries and writing. And there's an interview with him in this month's The Writer (Oct. 2009)with some great advice (for me) - since I need to get back in the habit of writing everyday.
"Keep your head down and write. Write at least 15 minutes every day because even if you only get minutes, your mind has to churn story. That keeps it fresh and in your creative mind. By keeping your head down, I mean don't stick your head out of the hole and look around for what to write. Write a story that you would want to read. Just you. It starts with writing for yourself.""
