About this title: Some dogs simply do not respond to conventional dog training and, although they may be lovable and sweet, can also create problems for their human guardians. Suzanne Clothier takes a novel approach to dog training and recommends creating a primitive, yet effective, level of communication with animal companions. Where some dogs are happy to follow their master's lead, other dogs are obstinate and reject commands outright. For these dogs, Clothier suggests forming a relationship of cooperation and mutual agreement. She gives simple, step-by-step instructions for appreciating and understanding a ...

"Dogs hold a nearly miraculous capacity to lift us from our musings about the future and into a celebration of the now. They prove the strength of a wordless presence to mend the breakage of our hearts."
"Excellent book! Highly recommended to anyone with a dog. One feels one is learning to speak dog and have a deeper understanding of what they are trying to tell you."
"I really enjoyed this book . It is part of the suggested reading list for my puppy obedience class, and of course I had to get it from my library asap! What I love is how this book focuses a lot on changing our ideologies and preconceived notions about dogs, the way they learn, and training techniques- it's more about training the human than the dog and I wish more people understood that!! I love the example of teaching dogs to understand certain commands. Just because we think sit, stay, down are "standard commands", that's because we are human and we already understand English. But if we used words like "apple, peach, raspberry" in place of "sit, stay, down", we need to teach the dog what each of those commands is to mean, what we want from them, what hand motion differentiates each, and what reward they will receive for doing each.
As a dog person, I enjoyed the positive training technique mindset, rather than using cruelty or hurtful techniques which can often create more anxiety and fear in the dog over time. I also think one of the most valuable lessons that my dog trainer and the book focuses on- do not push your dog too far too soon. Just because we are impatient or think they should be learning at a given pace, doesn't mean that's right for every dog. My foster dog had a rough time before we got him. He can be skiddish at times and if you just give him some time without getting impatient, he warms up like a teddy bear. He's so sweet and gentle, but he's a puppy, and needs to learn. We have to set realistic expectations in both dog training and life, so this book is a great re-inforcer of both :)"
