"First of all I loved this book. It has some good points and some bad points. Good: It has a very interesting veiw of werewolves and their society. It does have some great insight as to what is the purpose behind violence and can we overcome our base instinct to use violence. Bad: It is most definately told from the eyes of a teen. She is quite whinny and not just a little bit cranky towards all adults in general. She is so self absorbed she does not understand the people around her. She thinks her were wolve friends are just being jerks when obviously they are doing dangerous stuff. She thinks her mother is totally over her father when again it is obvious to the reader she is not. She hates Gabriel and thinks he is arrogant and cruel when in fact he is not. Her perseption is very hard to look beyond. However I do not think this book belongs in the Young Adult section. Just because the story is told from the vantage point of a teen does not mean it is a teen book. It is very sex obsessed, without actually being graphic. There is also quite a bit of graphic violence."
"With all the 'vampire' books around, I thought I'd try something a little different, werewolves. From what I've found out, this is a book for young adult readers, but it contains quite mature themes. Some of the scenes are sexually suggestive but don't go as far as a young adult audience might want them to (*wink*). On the more mature side is the violence and the subtext of violence. And the choices Vivienne makes throughout the novel. Its a good book, a very good book. I enjoyed it for itself, the writing, and the fact that it's not part of a series, but a complete and competent stand alone novel."
"Best thing about this book: The werewolves. A book can never have too many werewolves. Other than that it was teen angst at its most annoying and unconvincing. But it had werewolf sex!"
"This is a great readalike for Twilight. Vivian, a beautiful girl at the local high school, often finds herself alone. She sadly lost her father in a fire the year before and, more often than not, she does not see eye-to-eye with her mother at home. Sometimes she relishes the privacy she has in being alone, but other times, she wants friends. Her fellow high school students don't know that she and her family are actually loups garoux (werewolves). Most kids at the school just think that Vivian is stuck up or too proud because she is so beautiful, so they stay away. Through an accidental meeting at her school, however, Vivian talks to and, later, falls in love with a human boy named Aiden. He seems to understand her nature--the nature of a werewolf, the nature of magic and the unexplained. Maybe he actually knows what she is. As in Twilight, the reader must wonder, though, how this werewolf/human romance will work. There are many in the werewolf pack who object to mixing too closely with humans--their natural prey and, sometimes, enemy. Can Vivian resist her nature and not hurt Aiden? Given the dangers from the werewolf pack, can Vivian's and Aiden's romance last? Will Aiden even survive? And, ultimately, can Vivian go against the pack and reveal to Aiden her true nature? Highly recommended for teens; some adults will enjoy as well.
