About this title: Forget those early morning groans while clobbering through a bucket of range balls. Practice, in golf, of the mental game--the discipline, the focus--is the most important thing golfers can do to improve their game on their way to a scratch handicap. This Zen primer applies Buddhist techniques to the links, written by a practicing golfer and ...

"Ok, so don't laugh but I had to read this book to see if it would help my golf game. I have to say it did even being 30 weeks pregnant. I am still playing and loving it. My handicap has stayed about the same even though this little guy keeps me from swinging in my full range of motion. I recommend this book to all of my golfing friends!"
"Though I would hardly call myself a fan of the game of golf, I happened upon this book and was interested in the "zen" aspects of the game. I read this book in about 2 hours and though I skimmed most of the golf-specific parts, I did gleam a bunch of nice nuggets that are steeped in Buddhist philosophy.
The book has many witty, short stories, many of which I have read in other books about Buddhism. It also has plenty of pithy platitudes and a healthy dose of bragging about his successes in teaching the game.
That notwithstanding, the following are a few of the comments I thought worthy of note (none of which are specific to golf):
p. 14 - Ösel Tendzin's instructions about complaining: "Don't complain. About anything. Not even to yourself." Interesting words to live by, and perhaps something we all need to work on. I know I do.
p. 74 - the concept that we are more "human doings" than "human beings." We need to stop focusing too much on the things we are doing and planning to do, but live in the moment. Use positive mindfulness to be in the present.
p. 109 - "Consciously thinking about how you perform a physical activity interferes with doing it naturally and accurately." I find this to be true.
p. 149 - "Emotional experiences register more strongly in memory than ordinary experiences." I guess this is all too evident, but his examples show how this can affect us in our daily lives.
p. 153 - about anger: "The key is to change your attitude, not try to get rid of the emotion. Neither suppress nor indulge the emotion. Acknowledge the emotion's intensity, but drop the storyline connected with it."
p. 169 - Ösel Tendzin regarding controlling your thoughts and emotions: "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. One person will struggle with the waves and be battered about. Another person will learn to ride them. Same waves, very different experiences."
p. 173 - When facing both adversity and triumph, to keep yourself balanced you should always think to yourself, "These things come and go."
p. 189 - Venerable Chögyam Trungpa: "To be a warrior is to learn to be genuine in every moment of your life." and "Confidence is a change in attitude that makes the seemingly unworkable workable...we can appreciate life even when things don't go our way."
p. 194 - 4 principles: virtue, discipline, humor, friendship
p. 196 - "In every situation, conduct yourself as if your five year-old child were watching you."
p. 198 - Chögyam Trungpa: "The ultimate goal of a Shambala warrior is to foster an enlightened society, an environment in which individuals manifest peace, openness, and compassion in relating to themselves and others.""
"I love this audiobook. It's so easy to get in my own way when it comes to my game. When that happens I'll start listening to it from the beginning, and I'm reminded (again) to notice the mental gymnastics I play in my head that interfere with relaxing, staying focused and having fun playing golf. I like Joseph Parent's tools that he offers to reduce those my issues. In the end I get what really want: confidence in playing golf.
At some point I'll reach the plane where I start applying the lessons in this book to the rest of my life."
