"Meh. It just goes too far. I believe that our health can be affected by our mental states, sure; I even believe that some physical ailments are, quite possibly, almost entirely connected to our minds and emotions. But I simply cannot accept that every single thing that happens to my is something I have brought on by my own mental attitude. Sometimes bad things just happen."
"I've been using this book off and on for years, but had never read the whole thing, until recently. I was impressed with the easy readability. The language is so simple and clear. I like the frequent examples Hay provides to illustrate her concepts. The part I was taken with was the little chapter, "Daily Work," in which she describes a longer term use of affirmations around her landlord and moving. I have mixed feelings about using her "list." On the one hand it seems too simplistic to me. On the other hand, she says she has reports from therapists that it is accurate 90-95% of the time. I just have trouble believing that issues can be reduced to simple solutions like this when I have been trained to think more in a systems approach. At the same time, I can see the intuitive rationale with each body concept. So far my approach has been to use the list anyway and see if it helps the client, or me. Finally, I am awestruck with what this woman has overcome in her life, and the courage and gumption she has demonstration in shaping her life in that way that she has. What a great role model!"
"In the infinity of life where I am, all is perfect, whole, and complete. I recognize my body as a good friend. Each cell in my body has Divine Intelligence. I listen to what it tells me, and know that its advice is valid. I am always safe, and Divinely protected and guided. I choose to be healthy and free. All is well in my world."
Even better...in Chapter 15 she again includes here "List." The same list given in her boo, Heal Your Body.
If you look up the problem, she provides the probable mental cause and provides a new thought pattern.
For example, for diabetes... Cause: Longing for what might have been. A great need to control. Deep sorrow. No sweetness left. New Thought Pattern: This moment is filled with joy. I now choose to experiene the sweetness of today.
For lower leg problems... Probable cause: Fear of the future. No wanting to move. New Thought Pattern: I move forward with confidence and joy, knowing that all is well in my future.
The ones I chose to look up I found revealing, enlightening, and truthful."
"The premise is that every single ailment or physical problem you have is a result of an emotional problem. Cool, actually. Every sickness your mom, friend, mailman has, you can see what kind of emotional baggage they're dealing with (and your own, but that's not quite so fun). It's interesting how it's dead on every time. The problem is that Hay's proposed cure (simple positive affirmations) doesn't seem so effective. It's great to know that your headache is caused from fear, but then what? It's not as easy as it sounds to cure all of your emotional issues. It's a great resource to figure out the issues of people in your life, though. :)"
