"This book is based on three Native American character's lives. Rayona is a shy teenager who is half Native American and half African American. She faces alot of conflicts with her mother who is an alcaholic/party animal, and gets teased in school for being mixed. Christine, is Rayona's mother. She is Native American, and is married to an African American soldier named Elgin. Thoughout her part of the book, she faces some difficulties with Elgin witch reflects alot on Rayona. Ida, is Native American also, and is Christine's mother. Christine and Rayona both call her aunt Ida. Ida cares alot about Christine, but Christine does not think that she does. Both Christine and Rayona are not that close to her. I am making a text to world connection with Rayona. Alot of people in the world have alcahol addicted parents like Rayona. I can connect Rayona to alot of the children around the world, because they share alot of the similar conflicts that their parents lay out for them. Once again, children throughout the world face difficulties and conflicts in life just as Rayona did. I rate this book four stars. The main reason that I rate it four stars is because the book was very interesting and the author threw in alot of rising actions that kept me wanting to read more. The one thing I did not like about the book was, there were some disturbing contents in some of the pages. I would recommend this book to people who like heart warming, realistic fiction books."
"A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, Michael Dorris is a book about the three women. The main characters are Rayona, a 15 year old girl. Daughter of Christine. It takes place in Montana on Native American reservation. Christine, Rayona's mother. Aunt Ida, Rayona's grandmother. One of Christine's internal struggles is that she feels guilty for telling Lee (her brother) to join the army. Her external struggle is that Aunt Ida, doesn't really like her, and they really don't get along.
During my time reading this book I made a text-to-self connection. There was this part in the book where Willard (Aunt Ida's friend) let his defenses down. This reminded me of when I meet someone new. I put an invisible shield up so that nobody can see my emotions. Just like what Willard did. Even though we both put up this shield the time comes when we take it down. Willard and I both learn that we have to trust others and put our defenses down.
I would give this book 2 star. I felt like this book was missing things. It finished off a chapter or a part leaving you lost and wondering what just happened in the book. I also feel that the order of the parts really doesn't make sense and that it's very confusing for me to understand. Even though I didn't understand it I liked the characters. I thought that the characters were well drawn out and that they could easily give you a clear picture in your mind. I would recommend it to someone who likes books about family and about relationships between family members."
"This book is about 3 generations of women in a family. Rayona is the daughter, Christen is the mother, and Aunt Ida is the "Grandma". It is about are 3 parts and each part is through the eyes of each person. The story begins with Rayona playing cards with Christine in the hospital, when Rayona's African-American father Elgin visits, making Christine angry. Christine leaves the hospital with Rayona, threatening to kill herself at the spot where Rayona was born. Christine eventually leaves Rayona with Aunt Ida, where over time, Rayona begins to learn about herself and where she came from. This is the story that is in 3 point of views. The setting of this book takes place in Seattle, Denver, and Tacoma.
During the book, I made a text-to-self connection. In the book they talk a lot about Christine's brother, Lee, and how the are very close. My connection to Christine and Lee is that they are very close and my brother and I are very close. I found how she protected him interesting because I have to protect him just the same with my brother because he is only 4 and I'm 12.
I would defiantly NOT recommend this book! It was really boring and there was only one big secret through the whole entire book! I thought that the book was absolutely awful and I'm giving it only 1 star! Note to Sadelle and Cricket: I HATE THIS BOOK AND NEXT YEAR SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SUFFER!"
"This book, Yellow Raft in blue water was about 3peoples point of life. Rayonna being the smallest, christine as second and lastly Aunt Ida. Rayonng is the daughter of christine and christine was the daughter of Clara. The starts out at the hostiptal and mostly home in a town or city. It shows how they feel and they way of life and what was going on in the pass.
While reading this book. i made a lot of connections and mostly text to self. The 3 [people remind me of my generation of how they acted. Just like my parents and family i heard there way of how life goes everytime I go to sleep, when i was younger. even though their way of acting hated eachother they love eachother in the inside and thats what counts.
i will give this book 2 stars because its sort of hard to understand cause it jumps to another characther. i don't really get it of how the author describe his characther but the actions are fine.I was prod i made it thoguh and remember most of the details
