About this title: The author took off for a year in a cabin deep in Maine, along with Jack, his pet raven. This is the lively, Thoreauvian journal he kept of the human and natural goings-on there.

"Heinrich gives us a good look at life without modern amenities in central Maine. HIs descriptions of creatures and the interactions they have on a life cycle stage is fantastic and worthy of the parts where his blindness to his own solitary state makes you want to shake him.
He pines for a family after two ruined marriages. He should read Alice Miller, Drama of the Gifted Child to keep from repeating his mistakes.
All that human drama on the side, the creatures, ravens and insects are exciting indeed."
"Each of us will find a book that changes our life, or at the very least, one which stays with us for a lifetime. This book is one of less than five books in my life, that truly and deeply, stays with me. It's one of those books that I pull out of my library often to re read, perhaps 6 or 7 times now, often randomly selecting chapters based on what season I am in."
"Speed-read this while spending a weekend in the Maine Woods. Greatly admire his powers of observation, his self-reliance, and his ability to get a full day's work in while swatting off black flies. Or maybe he doesn't swat and that's his secret. Don't miss his description of a mouse fry-up. Yum."
"I liked best about this book because I could imagine myself in the forest! That made the book very enjoyable. I loathe the city because it is too crowded & overpopulated with people and since it isn't feasible to escape the city as often as I like, at least this book is somewhat of an escape. The author has a cabin in Maine.
The best thing I like about the city is the pigeons, doves, other birds and plants, once in awhile I see rabbits. I am partially similar to the author in that he notices birds and plants. I think the majority of people don't care, don't notice and/or just see plants and animals as things to destroy, kill, eat or run over with their cars. I'm not like the author in that he is a hunter.
The author notices the sounds of the birds, knows what types of birds makes those sounds, notices the time of day and time of of year different species are vocal, which species migrate. I am the same way, except I observe and identify desert birds of course, the birds in Maine are different species than the ones here.
He is also notices that the same species of trees, such as Red Maple, don't necessarily all change the same color in the fall but he noticed that each year the same tree will change the same color. I thought that was interesting.
I notice when my flowers bloom, have an idea what month they bloom, which is most of them bloom in March. Some love summer, such as the Red Bird of Paradise. I notice when the deciduous trees in the front yard lose their leaves, which is usually Dec. - Jan., then in March their new leaves start coming in.
The author write that on a clear day, he can see New Hampshire, Mt. Washington, and the Presidentials, all part of the same White Mountain chain. (We all been to the White Mountains in New Hampshire in August 2005).
The cabin in is western Maine (not eastern Maine... Boothbay Harbor where we went in July 2007). The cabin is few miles from Rumford, Maine. When he drives to town, he mentions driving to Farmington. (In case if any of my New Englander Goodreads friends know western Maine.)
Since we went to Vermont to see the fall colors last Oct. 2008, (but not this part of VT I don't think. I remember Jacksonville, VT) The author took Route 2 from Burlington, Vermont to his cabin which is about 200 miles away."
