About this title: Based on the author's extensive fieldwork, this classic ethnography, now in its fifth edition, focuses on the Yanomamo. These truly remarkable South American people are one of the few primitive sovereign tribal societies left on earth. This new edition includes events and changes that have occurred since 1992, including a recent trip by the author to the Brazilian Yanomamo in 1995.

"I've only read half of this but the author doesn't present it as if he understands these people, he doesn't really like them.. He goes to their village with his own food and gear, doesn't live like them. It's a horse's mouth glimpse of the history of who made contact with the last of the untouched by the white man and his weapons peoples. The philosophy's of anthropologists. ...now that I'm done subjecting myself to that book I have to mention that there is much controversy over this guy's practices. He brought these guys machete's which caused a few wars and lots of death. He portrayed them to the world and effected increasing government control of their lives by deeming them "The Fierce People." He also introduced a measles epidemic, thanks to skipping safety procedures because of his ties to the Venezuelan government and their helicopters. Oh and those same helicopter trips may have lead to the gold mining that is currently stripping these people of their land and resources. Seems learned more about the author than his subject!"
"I absolutely adore ethnographies, and I think this was the first I ever read. My poor copy is tattered and worn now, but it's just utterly fascinating to be engrossed in the customs and cultures of a group that seems so far removed from my own. (My favorite ethnography, though, is Lansing's 'Balinese'!)"
