"Another wild, drunken mess of a mystery set in Western Montana. This is the first book in Crumley's Milo series, and as usual, he's done a good job painting his detective. His drinking, drug-abuse, violoence, and self-loathing feel all to real. The same goes for the scenery-- I've never been to Montana, and after reading about its endless supply of seedy bars, weary drunks, and ugly tourists, I'm not sure I want to visit. Crumley is weakest when it comes to plotting-- the story is pretty loose to begin with, and it doesn't come to the same satisfying conclusion that he achieves in his masterpiece "The Last Good Kiss." But for solid noir readers, it'll be satisfying."
"Uh oh, so far this is no where near as fun as read now as when I read it back in my sloshed days.....whew, turned out to be great, once you get past the unbelievable mawkish romance at the beginning. Crumley's skill is with detailing the hearts and souls of derelicts and their lives. It is where his true passion and brilliance lies."
"James Crumley is not for everyone but the gritty vulgarity somehow resonates for me. Not as good as THE LAST GOOD KISS but there are some priceless paragraphs in this book."
