"A controversial book that some dismiss as outright quackery, the author makes the claim based on research that cancer is caused by a vitamin B17 deficiency. He also states that the American medical community knows it to be true based on many studies, but in conjunction with the FDA, has banned Laetrile (a B17 concentrate) for political reasons (you have to go to Mexico or Germany to get it). The vitamin compound was identified as part of the nitriloside family, found in over 1200 edible plants (most particularly the Prunus Rosacea family. This includes bitter almond, apricot, blackthorn, cherry, nectarine, peach & plum). The vitamin is also found in grasses, maize, sorghum, millet, cassava, linseed, apple seeds, buckwheat, alfalfa, peas, broad beans, berries, etc. (To see a list, go to the author's website.) Cultures like the Hunzas in the Himalayas have no cancer, and their diet is abundant in apricots-- including eating the pits, where most of this vitamin is found. The author covers the cyanide scare (yes, there is cyanide in peach and apricot pits) but says the danger is overblown and was a scare tactic to get Laetrile off the American market. The research claims when the fruit is eaten with the seed, it provides a protective effect from the cyanide, so if you're going to consume seeds/pits, do it with the fruit. Anyway, I don't know how much of this book is true. The author is not a doctor, but merely reporting on studies that have been done, starting with the work of Dr. Ernst T. Krebs from the '50's who first discovered the vitamin and claimed cancer was caused by this vitamin deficiency. I might start eating apple seeds with my apples, rather than discarding them, and eating millet for breakfast a little more often after reading this book. I do like books that look to food for prevention and reversal of disease.
Comically, the middle section of the book surprised me with a discourse on the history of socialism, Rockefeller's fight against free enterprise, Hitler's uprising, I. G. Farben, etc. The author was giving this history because of how socialism has creeped into America largely unnoticed, and why we now have a drug cartel/monopoly and high-priced political healthcare, of which cancer treatment is a large part. The book had a copyright of 1974 with a renewal in 1997, and I thought, wow, this is exactly what is happening in America. It was actually a very good historical summary of politics, though I had no idea a book on cancer would include something like this. It seems I can't get away from marxist themes this year, no matter where I turn! One disturbing part mentioned was that the American healthcare industry/government is withholding this knowledge that there already is a cure for cancer, because it is waiting for America to collapse and globalization to set in, so that cancer cure can be a "global victory" rather than just an American one (the author also mentioned America deliberately held back sending a man into space, letting the Russians go first, because communism already had a stronghold in America). Like I said, I have no idea if any of this is true, but it was an interesting read on different levels. If you want to read more, you can read the author's articles on his website.
This book goes against the large body of cancer research mentioned in The China Study by T. Colin Campbell regarding cancer-- in those studies, it was repeatedly shown that casein (milk protein) as well as fats (including olive oil) were the primary causes of cancers, most particularly those of the bowel, breast, reproductive, etc. I'm more apt to side with The China Study, as its research was far more extensive and expansive, and involved many different research groups all around the globe."
"One of many alternative cancer therapies that shows great signs of prevention and possible treatment. Just include foods with B17 in: when you eat an apple, eat a few of the seeds. Have certain sprouts with your salad or sandwich, etc. Highly recommend this book. I met an elderly man three summers ago ('06) who was passing through St. Ignace, Michigan, who had bladder cancer in the early '70's whose cancer left when he ate apricot kernels, then he went off them, it came back. He's back on, and cancer free for years."
