About this title: Using primary sources, this book provides a review of the lives of Egyptian women between about 3000 BC and 332 AD. It deals chiefly with the elite class since the peasants left little mark, and shows how, despite restrictions, some women wielded great power in Ancient Egypt.

"This book is very informative in a general way about the lives of women in ancient Egypt. Although Robins covers all periods from pre-Dynastic through the Greek and Roman conquests, the bulk of information comes from Middle and later periods. The information is divided into chapters about general areas of life (marriage, maternity, work, legal status, etc.). It is a very good book for a general overview of women in Egypt, and it was (possibly?) the first published book of this sort, so I can't be too harsh. Having said that, it is very conventional in the information it conveys and appears, in fact, quite conservative. There is no room for controversy in this book, and I suspect that this was a careful move on Robins' part. Egyptology is a highly cannonical field with an entrenched orthodox line that must be toed by aspiring scholars. Read Edward Said. The book appears to be written from an un-selfconsciously heteronormative bias. While there may be scant evidence for anything other that heterosexual relationships in ancient Egypt, the book seems to me to be naive in the uncritical acceptance of a straight-world paradigm. But, in many other ways the book is well worth reading and I do recommend it for anybody interested in what life in ancient Egypt was like for some women. It sure beats the male-centered studies of ancient Egypt that it is meant to complement (but not, necessarily challenge). Overall- not feminist enough for my tastes, but definitely good."
