"I figure if you're going to wade through this THICK book, there's a good chance you've decided to breastfeed ... so could do without the "why you should breastfeed" propaganda in Every. Single. Chapter. The biggest downfall of the book is its repetition of information. Otherwise, it does cover all the basics."
"I read this when my newborn was a week old. I read it while I breastfed. It has loads of valuable information. I wish I has started it while I was pregnant, I think it would have helped avoid some problems.
I did not read this book cover to cover. I read it out of order and I skipped some parts that did not apply to me.
"The notion that "breast is best" for the human child is rarely contested, and has even been promoted for decades now by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Therefore, most of the information in this book seems familiar or to some degree common sense, but reading it did give me a renewed commitment to make breastfeeding a priority with my own children. I also felt good enough about what I read to look up the local Le Leche League group meetings and plan to start attending this month. One thing I really appreciated was how the book outlined benefits to both mother and child through breastfeeding. Especially as I want to do everything possible to protect against postpartum depression, I felt intrigued to learn breastfeeding releases "feel good hormones" like prolactin and oxytocin in the mother, which can protect her against the typical stressors of parenting.
Note: at first I thought the studies mentioned throughout the book were not cited (i.e. the text reads: "one study found...and another study found..." usually without going into detail regarding the research). However, halfway through my reading I discovered the references section in the back of the book, which does adequately cite each study mentioned and correlates the references by page number. It should also be noted that some instructional parts of the book seemed too detailed and technical to hold my interest in my current stage of parenting (still months away from delivering my first child). So it might be a more useful read once I have experience breastfeeding--and then all the tips will probably sink in a bit more readily."
"If you are looking for practical tips on breastfeeding, read a different book. This book has plenty of information about why you should breastfeed but is short on useful information (especially given the length).
In addition, experts are quoted when they support the opinion of the La Leche League authors. In cases when experts or organizations have a different position, this is not mentioned. There are more practical and balanced books about breastfeeding out there."
