"I picked up this book on my way back from Europe, while browsing at an airport bookstore during my layover (just finished it this week). Upon reading the back cover synopsis, I thought, "well, maybe..." but then I read the first paragraph and was hooked. These are intimate yet lyric travel tales-- intimate in the sense of being sensory and honest about foibles. Steinbach shakes up her life after raising two sons (then in college) and heads off to live in Europe for almost a year on her own (in 1993). Six or seven years later, she looks through all of the postcard she sent home to herself as mementos and begins to write this book. It's got a little bit of everything-- adventure, literary references, travel nostalgia, wacky meet-along-the-way pals, and yes, the starts of a fine romance that Steinbach herself never imagined and which she describes in ways both coy and forthright in turns. A work of self-discovery and very well written. Kudos."
"I am rereading this book again. Really enjoyed it the first time around and came across it while searching for another book in my library. Alice Steinbach is an excellent writer and is able to transport me to Paris and draw me into her travel adventures from there."
"I received this book as a graduation gift, and I saved it to read when I was traveling. This turned out to be a good approach, because Steinbach's topic is a set of travels in Europe. I lucked out by traveling to a couple of her desinations without planning to, which added to the fun. I loved her literate and reflective style, which was interesting without being self-indulgent. There aren't any roller coaster highs and lows here, but there are some fun stories and observations. I found it refreshing to hear from an intelligent, accomplished, single woman. I'm currently reading the sequel, Educating Alice."
