"This is our first meeting with John Clark...if you follow Clansy's novels that tells you the back ground on this one.
This novel is quite a bit more violent than some of Clancy's other works (that's saying somethin I know) but that will hold true for the Clark centered novels in the series.
You get fast moving adventure with slightlt less of the political twists you get when the books are about "Jack". This is an intense read."

After the murder of Kelly's lover, he launches a one-man-war on the drug world that puts Nixon to shame. As gruesomely violent as he becomes, the reader can't help but identify with the sorrowful situation into which the protagonist Kelly is thrust."
"I wanted to read the whole "Jack Ryan" series in chronological order and this was the first according to my "google" search. I liked the book alright, but Jack was nowhere to be found in it (o.k. there was one brief mention of his name). I had issues with all the killing and lack of remorse as well as the fact that a supposedly street smart guy would pick up a young woman off the side of the road and sleep with her almost immediately (at least there is mention made of the consequences of this... can you say "STD"). I still liked the book in spite of all of this and have gone on through the next few books in the series. I found that the characters are all interspersed throughout the series so it is a good thing to have read the first even if it isn't the best!"
