About this title: In the tradition of Jack London, Gary Paulsen presents an unforgettable account of his participation in the 1,100-mile-long dogsled race called the "Iditarod". For 17 days, Paulsen and his team of dogs endured blinding wind, snowstorms, moose attacks, and more--yet relentlessly pushed on to the end. "The best author of man-against-nature adventures writing today".--Publishers Weekly.

"My favorite Gary Paulsen book - he makes the point, that the journey is more important than the destination - chronicles his attempts to become an Iditarod racer; driving from Minnesota with such a bad truck that bungee cords hold the doors shut and old metal cafeteria trays replace the rotted floor. When the dogs pull him horizontal across his front yard for the first time; he rides on his face and some matches in his pocket catch fire giving him the appearance of a "flaming meteorite." I love the way he writes!"
"I thought of this book recently while I was talking with a new friend, so I decided to add it to my Goodreads lists. This is an amazing book, written by an author known for his children's and young adult books. Don't let that fact dissuade you from picking it up. Gary Paulson is a powerful writer--one of the best when it comes to capturing the brutal beauty of nature. His writing reminds me of Jack London at his best. Winterdance is the true story of the author's passion, honestly and eloquently articulated. It is the type of writing that stays with you long after you close the cover. Warning though, it is a dog story--so keep a box of Kleenex close by..."
"This caught my eye when I saw Gary Paulsen's name--I remembered reading and loving The Hatchet when I read it nearly a decade ago. A closer look showed me it was about dogs, mushing, and that it was Paulsen's own real life adventure. The fact that I was heading to Alaska in a few weeks made me think it was fate. And I'm soooo glad I purchased it.
I deliberately read slower so I could enjoy the story for a lot longer. I may not have actually had to endure Alaska's harsh climate but I could certainly enjoy its beauty and wildness even more. Not that you need to be in Alaska yourself to enjoy the story.
Gary Paulsen remains an excellent story-teller and I loved reading about his training of the dogs and the actual Iditarod race told from a rookie's POV. If you love dogs and reading about gutsy (or perhaps just insane) and fun-loving people on a great adventure, I recommend this true story."
"This was a fun read. A great non-fiction read about a man from Minnesota who grew obsessed with dog sledding. The story follows fascinating tale of a man developing a close and primordial relationship with pack of sled dogs that are closer to wolves than pets. The book has lots of humorous moments when the dogs remind Gary that he is not really in control of this hardy dog sled team. The book describes the beginnings of his love of dog sledding, then the serious training, and finally the actual running of the Iditarod. The descriptions of Alaska are absolutely incredible. It's easy to forget that there are places as wild as Alaska, so it's great to get into a book that makes you feel like you're there. Pull this book out as a great winter read in front of the fire."
