"I am way out of practice on reading novels, I guess. I felt most of the time as though I needed a literature major to tell me what the heck was going on. Not in the micro sense -- there are many scenes of the narrator drinking beer, expressing befuddlement about not being able to find the nonexistent strange sheep he seeks, admiring his girlfriend's beautiful ears, etc., and I could literally tell what was happening. But any larger sense of what the ideas behind the novel were, why a particular part might be considered (per the jacket copy) funny, etc. sailed right by me.
One good indicator that I was overmatched was that every fantastic plot twist (e.g., the friend/business partner he's talking to is actually dead) caught me completely by surprise.
On the plus side, consistent with his nonfiction book about running that I enjoyed greatly, he has a wonderful command of language. Props to author and translator alike in that regard."
"This was the first book that I read from Murakami. It was recomended to me at the book store, and I must say that I never even considered Japanese literature. I gave it a shot and do not regret it one bit! What an introduction to a new world!
The main charectar is an incredibaly apathetic individual who strives to have a boring life. Goes to work, goes home, drinks a glass of whiskey and goes to bed. Everything changes when he posts a picture containing sheep on a mountain side in an advertisement for the advertising firm that he partially ownes. This picture was sent to him by his friend called "The Rat" with a letter requesting that this picture be posted where it can be seen by many people. Ofcourse this picture captures the attention of a man dressed in black who works for "the boss" (no one has names in this story). Life is no longer boring for our protaganist when he is instructed by the man in black to find the sheep with a star shaped marking on it's back, or be ruinned.
I docked this book a star because there were times when I was bored and felt as if i was reading to get to the good parts; however, this book gets 4 stars because the good parts were really good! Very glad I read this book and would recomend it to anyone as an introduction to Murakami. The sequal is "Dance Dance Dance" and was very good as well. Just finished "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the end of the world" which was incredible. Reading Wind Up Bird Chronicle next."
"This is a book which I really enjoyed. It is both whimsical and fantastical, while being set in the real world. Like most of Murakami's work, there are references to popular music, jazz, beautiful ears...
The protagonist is a thirtysomething, nice guy, who becomes embroiled in a chase for one extraordinary sheep. But knowing the sheep...really KNOWING the sheep, could prove to be dangerous.
An excellent read, however, it may make more sense to you if you are familiar with Murakami's quirky characters and settings."
"'A Wild Sheep Chase' is a trippy tale with a mix of detective story, myth, fantasy and philosophy. Though it can be enjoyed simply as a fable at its face-value, just a little thought reveals a multi-layered allegory. On one hand, "the sheep" could signify post-war Japan itself. At the same time, the protagonist's sheep chase also ends up being a search for his own identity, his emotions and meaning of his existence. It is as much a physical journey as a spiritual journey. There are also several references to Japan's history, its cultural and spiritual beliefs, which fit very smoothly with the obvious western influence and pop-culture allusions. For a multi-layered story, the writing is deceptively simple. It was mainly the last few chapters where the symbolism struck home and left me thinking about the novel long after I had finished reading it.
More than the plot, it is the little things about Murakami's writing which make this book memorable. What I am going to remember the most is how Murakami captures the mood of a place or a moment of time. It is as if a room or a rock or wind are really alive and that time, darkness, silence have several characteristics of their own. There is marvelous imagery, astounding descriptions of natural landscape and beautiful metaphors. The lead character is apathetic and mostly emotion-less, yet he does notice the shimmer of water in the sunlight or chirping of birds. He also has an interesting way of looking at mundane things and his thoughts often wander in strange directions. And Murakami's sense of humor is so cute!
(PS: If I happen to see a sheep during the next few days, it might creep me out a little. Damn you evil, magic sheep!)"
