About this title: Having escaped Count Olaf's clutches for now, the three Baudelaire siblings, Violent, Klaus and Sunny, arrive on the shores of Lake Lachrymose to stay with their latest guardian, Aunt Josephine. Sadly, though kind and well-meaning, Aunt Josephine is terrified of absolutely everything: she will not heat her radiators, use the telephone or cook food ...

"While it's certainly true that the three child protagonists of these books are met with a near unrelenting series of unfortunate events, I'm enjoying these books. I enjoy the writing style and the fact that the author isn't afraid to kill off a character here and there adds for a good bit of drama. Meant for children, the books are an easy read and sometimes I just need a break from trying to slog through The Brothers Karamazov (will I EVER finish???)...
I think if my son was just a wee bit older, he would be enjoying these books, too."
"I was a little disappointed at the beginning, because the as the third book in the series, it started to feel formulaic. This feels like the basic formula: Snicket warns us not to read this book if we want a happy ending, the Baudelaire orphans are shipped off to a new distant relative's home, Count Olaf shows up in disguise and tricks the new guardian, the oblivious Mr. Poe and the guardian are unconvinced that the stranger who shows up is actually Count Olaf even though it is plain as day to the children. Some plan is hatched, but they narrowly escape by Violet inventing something, Klaus reading something and Sunny biting something or someone.
Aunt Josephine, who loves grammar, and is afraid of nearly everything else, including realtors and using the stove to cook is the new guardian for this book. I didn't feel like she was nearly as interesting as Uncle Monty from the last book. As the story went on, though, despite the formula I found myself really enjoying the author's sense of humor and style of story telling once again. There was a great line about not putting something you are allergic to into your mouth, especially if that something is a cat, that just cracked me up and won me over again."
"The Baudelaire prhans are miserable after the death of Uncle Monty, and are sent to live with their Aunt Josephine, a woman absessed with grammar. She meets the captain of a ship, who the orphans are frightened of. She disappears, but the note she leaves has many grammitical errors in it, which she wouldn't do. Violet and Klaus figure out that she left a coded note for them and set out to ind her with Sunny. But the captain seems determined to not let them find her, and would prefer if she was killed by the dangerous leeches that live in a lake nearby..."
