About this title: In this fairy tale adaptation, horror specialist Lee retrofits the well-known tale of Snow White with notions borrowed from several versions--the Walt Disney film, the original Grimm version, and others--along with her own take on the story.

"I really enjoyed this book, a radically different retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. It was very dark and sensual and held my interest through the end."
"A disjointed, somewhat pretentious retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, White as Snow tries to bring the tale back to it's roots before the story was modified and sanatized by the likes of the Brothers Grimm and Walt Disney. Unfortunately, the author tried to bring in too many elements from too many different incarnations of the tale and the story suffered. Specifically, the attempted fusion between the Snow White tale and the Persephone myth (where a young goddess is abducted to be the bride of Hades, lord of the underworld, while her mother Demetria, goddess of the Earth and the harvest searches frantically for her) was not a good fit in my opinion. The number of times rape featured as a plot point became questionable, both in terms of credibility and good taste. And the passive, disturbed mental states of both mother and daughter made both characters bizarre and unsympathetic. While I have enjoyed other books in this series, I could have happily skipped this installment."
"Tanith Lee's White as Snow is elegent and sensual and terrible. Not terrible as in badly written, but terrible in it's absence of feeling, hideous in it's coldness. It's a fairy tale in which there can be no truly happy ending.
This version of Snow White is twined with the myth of Demeter and Persephone. It begins with Arpazia, the little girl who becomes the witch queen, then follows with Coira, her unwanted daughter, product of rape. In fact, about halfway through the book, I lost track of how many rapes had been committed against one of the women or the other.
It's a tale in which you can't tell the difference between love and hate, and the tiny pinprick of light the author finally offers in the last page is not enough to banish the clinging darkness."
